First time I've ever heard that from someone that has actually been on campus.

Now I have to travel to USA to see what the fuss is all about.

It's two different settings and I like rolling hills with big trees and the layout with the swamp on the far side. I also prefer the style of the buildings at USA better.

I still rank WKU as the best campus if we were still in the SBC but USA would be a very close 2nd actually tied. But it's all about what you are use to seeing and different styles for different areas.

I'm basing this on building, trees, grass, hills, layout ...not girls. Just something we do at every campus and when you have your wife with you how else are you going to get to look at 20 year olds without getting knocked upside your head.

I'll warn you though, to see most of the campus you'll need to get out of the car and walk around...and its all uphill...both directions...

Whole-heartedly agree! The campus is very nice. The area is very nice also.

If coming up for a warm weather sport, bring a bathing suit. There are some really nice tubing spots in San Marcos and a fantastic water park and more tubing in New Braunfels about 20 miles down the interstate. There are also resorts along the rivers if folks are so inclined.

Texas State's Meadows Center is interesting. It has a nice spring fed lake with glass bottom boats (similar to attractions in Florida). It used to be a commercial attraction for years, but it has been part of the University since 1994. It's right across the road from the football stadium.

If one likes caving, there are six karst limestone commercial caverns in the area also...not as large as Mammoth Cave of course, but my family enjoyed them. The farthest one is around 90 miles away from San Marcos. All the others are within 60 miles of San Marcos. We had a very enjoyable 3-4 day mini-vacation in the San Marcos / New Braunfels area several years ago and toured most of the commercial caverns in the area (from Georgetown north of Austin to San Antonio) combined with non-caving visits to Austin and San Antonio. It's a great way to spend a hot Texas day in natural air conditioned comfort. We stayed in San Marcos because of its central location and made the short drive to the spots.

In town, there is Wonder Cave which was interesting, but not on the same level of interest for us as the others. It is a fault cave so there aren't very many natural formations.

There's good food in the area, also.

I've heard speculation that basketball will be next on the upgrade list here...but it wont happen until after we are completely done with all the football upgrades...which means 2017-2018 at the earliest.

I wouldn't doubt someone's stance when saying "X has the best looking campus," because that's subject to different people's tastes (you noted the architecture wasn't your style).

Literally though... you're the first person I've ever heard of that said it wasn't the best looking campus they've been on. So, I take that to mean that USA (and WKU) are something special as well, so now I actually want to check them out.

The UALR athletic director moved me and a buddy from seats we paid for simply because the two of us were cheering louder than the 300 or so Lady Trojan fans in attendance(this was at the very beginning of their upswing in WBB). He even said it was the ref, not him, making the call.

We've had a few fans nearly ejected for cheering loudly in the early years of the Stephens Center as well. I think its a UALR tradition.

Did you read the rules at UALR? I believe they have a sign (or it might be on the back of your ticket...can't find mine and I'm getting old so sign or ticket would be the same) you can be ejected from the arena for yelling at the officials.

As far as the ushers at UALR they moved us (WKU fans) to a season ticket section behind the Western bench (visitor section is a corner one next to this). When UALR went on their 15 point run in a 2 minute span one fan kept jumping up throwing his arms up high and running down the lane.

Then turning around pointing at the mother of Caden Dickerson (wku player) his father took offense to it and came close to blows being thrown. I understand the excitement but come on you're 50+ years old no need for all of that.

There are some decent basketball arenas in the SBC ...just not enough fans but that's every where. If ASU and UL-L ever upgrades their arenas I think you would be better served if both downsized to 7k and brought everything in tighter.

Troy made the correct decision by going small and they got more bang for their buck. And it fits their fanbase better.

We are hearing reports that the Cajundome in Lafayette may be getting a 15-19 million dollar upgrade in the next 2 or 3 years. Although reduced seating capacity is not in the plans (the Cajundome serves the Lafayette community much more than just a basketball arena for UL), it has been rumored that the seating configuration for basketball will move the seats much closer to the court. Thus, improving sight lines and producing a much more intimate setting for Basketball.

We will see if it actually comes to fruition.

You also have to take in the timing of seeing each. I brought the cold, wind, and rain with me to TXST and it was a nice warm sunny day when we went to USA. Thursday is suppose be sunny with 65 degree temps so I might have a different view this time. I can see why people say it's a great looking campus...it is

At Western I like the old stately buildings like Cherry Hall mixed in with the new and I'm use to seeing more brick (red) . If my first time seeing Western's campus was in the late fall early winter Western wouldn't rank as high. Spring, Summer and early Fall it's like a post card....

at least to me :)

Improving the sight lines will help an already enjoyable venue. A minor Cajun Dome complaint compared to other arenas was the distance from the action. Close to the action was one of the things I liked about Blackham Coliseum. Some of the most intense games I have experienced in any arena were at Blackham. All in all, the Cajun Dome was a very nice place. We had tickets four years after it opened so it was still basically new back then. We enjoyed our three year season ticket run watching games at the Cajun Dome.

We loved living in Lafayette and miss a lot of things. After a little over 20 years, Houston has gotten more tolerable, but our relatively short stay in Lafayette still brings back a lot of great memories.

RE: TXST & UTA fans?
I remember parking by the Cajundome for the TXST-UL game and thinking it was just a fresh paint job from looking like a nice facility. I remember the roof being very faded, aging the building terribly. We didn't go inside so I can't comment on the inside.

I also remember driving by an old coliseum between the UL campus and the football stadium. I thought it was pretty cool in a "glad-you-don't-have to-play-there-but-its-still-useful-for-something" kind of way.

Our basketball arena gets a lot of crap because of "the wall", however if we ever do build a new arena, I hope they put it in the same place. I like it being close to campus, to the main road (Aquarena Springs Dr), and close to the park/river, not in the middle of 10 acres of parking lots like a lot of college basketball arenas.

A little update here since this thread was brought back up. The Cajun Dome will be undergoing a $19 million dollar renovation. The renovation will take roughly two years to complete, but the majority of the renovations are said to be complete prior to next season.

I have heard that seating capacity may actually be reduce slightly with more suites being built. But no one outside of a few have actually seen any rendering of what the final renovation is suppose to look like.
