I'll warn you though, to see most of the campus you'll need to get out of the car and walk around...and its all uphill...both directions...
Whole-heartedly agree! The campus is very nice. The area is very nice also.
If coming up for a warm weather sport, bring a bathing suit. There are some really nice tubing spots in San Marcos and a fantastic water park and more tubing in New Braunfels about 20 miles down the interstate. There are also resorts along the rivers if folks are so inclined.
Texas State's Meadows Center is interesting. It has a nice spring fed lake with glass bottom boats (similar to attractions in Florida). It used to be a commercial attraction for years, but it has been part of the University since 1994. It's right across the road from the football stadium.

If one likes caving, there are six karst limestone commercial caverns in the area also...not as large as Mammoth Cave of course, but my family enjoyed them. The farthest one is around 90 miles away from San Marcos. All the others are within 60 miles of San Marcos. We had a very enjoyable 3-4 day mini-vacation in the San Marcos / New Braunfels area several years ago and toured most of the commercial caverns in the area (from Georgetown north of Austin to San Antonio) combined with non-caving visits to Austin and San Antonio. It's a great way to spend a hot Texas day in natural air conditioned comfort. We stayed in San Marcos because of its central location and made the short drive to the spots.
In town, there is Wonder Cave which was interesting, but not on the same level of interest for us as the others. It is a fault cave so there aren't very many natural formations.
There's good food in the area, also.
