Torch, I think it's safe to say that nobody would line up the songs you've listed so far in the same order. Tastes vary, and some of these selections of your's have me questioning your musical tastes. It certainly isn't anywhere close to mine.

Smoke on the Water would be easily in my top twenty.

That song had/has a cult like following.

I don't call looking at another list of some guy's opinion of the order of things fun. But that's all today's society seems to want.

I think it's stupid - like preseason polls. Preseason polls are a popularity contest. And the popularity contest turns into a legitimized list once the season begins. The most popular teams start at the top, and good teams have to work they way up through the popular ones to get the ranking they really deserve.

Today's people feel a need to rank things, and those not on the list get put down. But each list is nothing more than an opinion, or at best an accumulation of opinions. That's all. It isn't real, or upsets would NEVER happen.

This list is little different.

I’ll go ahead and prepare myself for the low status of Wayne and Garths favorite Queen song.

So far we have a synonymous taste in “Rock & Roll”
But I think your criteria for the rankings is quit different than what I would use.

I’ll give credit for doing this exhaustive list…. a monumental task indeed.

I actually do include the sort of "cult" following of some songs as part of the criteria. But I think that's declined over the years for many of them, which is a pretty big indicator of how good a song really is.

Anyway, most of those classics still get their dues. And Deep Purple certainly doesn't get snubbed.

I did a quick look at the top songs. 16 different artists in the Top 20. And looking at the Top 50, I'd bet that people would say "that should be in the Top 20" for 30-35 of them. 03-lol Just can't squeeze them all in that tiny space.

Well that hornets nest is still stirred up.

This group we hit our Billy trifecta!

321 Hello it's Me -- Todd Rundgren-- Hello, where are you on radio these days, Todd?
322 Running with the Devil -- Van Halen
323 My Life -- Billy Joel-- Yes, the theme song to Bosom Buddies. As a MAC fan, it's amusing to think of to Toledo guys who go to ZSU, and then can't afford to live where their job is. Still it turned out alright for them as Tom Hanks got Sunny, and Peter Scolari got Julia Duffy after he moved to Vermont. I wonder how offensive this show is considered these days, for very different reasons than 1980.
324 Anyway Anyhow -- The Who
325 Emotions in Motion -- Billy Squier-- Wow, I never knew this. http://nypost.com/2013/11/16/the-hip-hop...ly-squier/ Oh my.
326 So Far Away -- Dire Straits
327 Wooden Ships -- C,S,N&Y
328 Double Vision -- Foreigner
329 It's a Kind of Magic -- Queen
330 White Wedding -- Billy Idol

Ranking songs is tough, there’s no way I could do hundred let along 500.

Plus It may have been just the environment in which I grew up, but the
seventies and the early eighties were more about albums than singles.
Using Deep Purple as an example, Machine Head was must have.

RE: Top 500 (321-330)
Ten years and a number of changes happen. Our local classical rock station changed position and took over the previous "oldies" station. Guess that says something right there. One good thing was that they went from playing the Rolling Stones at least once per hour, to a little more variety. Scratch that, they played one of six Rolling Stones songs at least once per hour. Does anyone really need to hear "Street Fightin' Man" that many times? In their life?
Anyway, the current station plays more variety in terms of artists, but the songs by a given artist are pretty limited. And there are some "favorites" that I suspect have something to do w/ royalty payments made by the corporate owner. But hey it's DC, not known for rock music like Cle, Chi or SF.
A list like this reminds me that there's a lot more out there that can be enjoyed.

311 Livin Lovin Maid -- Led Zeppelin
312 In the Air Tonight -- Phil Collins
313 Jungleland -- Bruce Springsteen
314 Hey 19 -- Steeley Dan
315 Peaceful Easy Feeling -- Eagles
316 Don't Stand so Close to Me -- Police
317 Honky Tonk Woman -- Rolling Stones
318 Give Peace a Chance -- John Lennon
319 Norwegien Wood -- Beatles
320 Voyage to the Center of the Mind -- Amboy Dukes-- You didn't think I'd forget this, did you?

The Amboy Dukes, named after the Irving Shulman novel of the same name.
Perhaps tame by today's provoking literature... but still a most disturbing read.

It has many similarities to the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati, wh/ the producers claim were coincidental, although both were based on KMET in LA, and both came out in 1978. The full irony of course being that WKRP was an AM station, a big part of the plot. In one WKRP episode they have a contest to name six songs, where brief excerpts are played rapidly in succession. One of those was Tumbling Dice...the leader of this section.

Don't leave LA out. It may not be as obvious a choice but remember that the Sunset Strip was the breeding ground for a lot of now classic bands. The Doors and Van Halen got their start here and a ton of big time 70s bands played here a lot, not to mention all the hair bands later on. It still has a thriving (if hard for me to understand 03-old) music scene. KMET ("Little bit of heaven, 94.7, KMET, tweetle dee!") was home to a great progressive rock format in the 70s and into the 80s. And rival station KLOS was a kind of pioneer in classic rock (stepping away from the oldies format). Also, KROQ, since the 80s, has been one of the largest modern rock stations in the country (has helped to launch a ton of artists).

OK, I'm done on my LA Chamber of Commerce soap box.

Fair enough. I thought about saying LA vs SF. Both are far more involved in music than DC.

So we're concluding the second set of 100 classical rock songs. And yes Mick, we like it too

301 It's Only Rock and Roll -- Rolling Stones
302 Tangled up in Blue -- Bob Dylan-- Dylan premiers
303 Cheap Sunglasses -- ZZ Top
304 Hurts So Good -- John Mellencamp
305 Running on Empty -- Jackson Browne
306 Modern Love -- David Bowie
307 40 -- U2
308 Eleanor Rigby -- Beatles
309 With a Little Help from My Friends -- Joe Cocker-- Woodstock performances get extra credit
310 25 or 6 to 4 -- Chicago

Some more last minute updates to the list.

I haven't been able to pay as close attention to the last few posts, but I still keep wondering about bands/artists I haven't seen yet, and wondering when they'll show up. Traffic jumps to mind. Sting as well. You've got a nice spread of Police songs in here, but as innovative as they were, I think Sting may surpass them in lyrics and overall melodic quality. Really surprised we're almost 200 into this list without one song of his as a solo act.

Amboy Dukes pops up and makes me wonder about other one hit wonders. Not too many so far. Shocking Blue's Venus, The Knack's My Sharona, Stories' Brother Louie? Very curious to see where those fall.

Other than that, you appear to like The Cars and Billy Squier more than I do. Happy to see Steely Dan getting more mention, misspelling notwithstanding. 03-wink
