Moving on the questions continue. Is #451 really rock at all? More like a piano sonata. But, I'm gonna say that I love It's a Kind of Magic to work out to, and this piece works for that too. But, I could be convinced to put Gimme the Prize in its stead.

In the City is my only quibble here. I'd put it much higher but I don't reflect the conventional wisdom of Eagles fans. I continue to be impressed by what looks like tremendous depth to this list. (On the other hand, if your Top 200 are full of Rick Astley, Twisted Sister and Culture Club, well, that will explain a lot...).

Do you really want to hurt me?

RE: Top 500 (451-460)
Well, that didn't take long, I'm already set to break Brooks Owl's #1 guideline. So let's get in step

441 Dancing Days -- Led Zeppelin
442 Dance the Night Away -- Van Halen
443 Somewhere Down the Crazy River -- Robbie Robertson-- Sort of an obscure track, and not quintessential rock. But it's got a great melody and effects for its traits, and was on the classic rock stations when it came out. I requested this from my hometown's classic rock station last year (listen to it online) and they didn't have it. Fun fact: I thought this was released in the 90's, b/c that's when I remember it. But it actually came out Oct 1987, just two weeks apart from Sting's Nothing Like the Sun, an absolute must have album.
444 Crosstown Traffic -- Jimi Hendrix
445 Hit Me with Your Best Shot -- Pat Benetar
446 Dandelion -- Rolling Stones-- I never hear this on the radio anymore.
447 Dream On -- Aerosmith
448 Do Do Do Do, Da Da Da Da -- Police
449 Life is Just a Fantasy -- Aldo Nova
450 Lovely Rita -- Beatles-- This is actually a pretty interesting song, and perhaps somewhat prescient. It is all about changing gender roles, and has a feminist thought sprinkled throughout. A definite discussion piece for today's manosphere, with beta males (and perhaps even transgenders) here and Japan's herbivores.

Eh, what the hell. I've already stipulated my standards are crap. And besides, in 500 songs you've got to break a couple of rules, right? I'm thrilled you've got Robbie Robertson in there as a solo act (I assume The Band will have something higher placed).

@ Dance The Night Away
--I'd really have to see where you have other tracks from Van Halen's catalog before I say "why?" I like the song ok enough, but not enough to make a T500 list.

@ Crosstown Traffic
--I like Jimmy sure enough, but that song never did much for me.

@ Hit me with your Best Shot
--Pat Benetar had the pipes to be a great rock frontwoman. I love that song. IMO, she was kind of like in the same bad ass mode as Joan Jett.

@ Dream On
--Probably one of my top Aerosmith faves. The whole vibe of the song is great. Granted, I first heard it when they reissued it and not when it was out originally.

Really? I think musically it's sound, and it's a fun song.

I heard Hendrix's "Little Wing" the other night on a Baltimore station. Not my favorite, but nice to hear some variety.

I like Pat Benetar, and she definitely gets airplay around here. But this is a very simple song musically, that's why it's fairly low.

Now we head into some variety

431 Rock and Roll Heart -- Eric Clapton
432 Goin' Mobile -- The Who
433 Ruby Tuesday -- Rolling Stones
434 Hippie Hippie Shake -- Beatles
435 Gimme All Your Lovin -- ZZ Top
436 Rock Me Tonight -- Billy Squier-- Maybe this should be higher
437 Glory Days -- Bruce Springsteen-- Maybe this should be lower
438 You've Got to Stand for Something -- John Mellencamp-- Solid song. Definitely another push for Mellencamp taking the role of the country's folk singer
439 JeanGenie -- David Bowie-- Hat tip to the weirdness of the 60s. Things are stranger today.
440 Mellow Yellow -- Donovan-- A couple of years ago I was in McDonalds I was immediately taken w/ the song being played. Had a great psychedelic vibe that I absolutely love. Turned out it was Season of the Witch, which obviously I hadn't heard in quite a long time. It infuriates me that Donovan gets no attention these days. Mellow Yellow isn't his best, but it is pretty well known.

So far I have only four songs as five stars in my iTunes.
Although there are two others that would have received top ranking if I owned them.

Since I have an eclectic taste in music, 6 out of 70 is not bad.

Brook's Owl anticipates the next question regarding what is classical rock: what's the difference between pop and rock? Technically rock is popular music, so it's a subset of pop. But why is Billy Joel, or even Elton John, considered rock, and yet the Go Gos aren't? The Go Gos made it through rough the rough LA music landscape for one reason: they rock!

There are some posters here who know a lot about music, maybe they can quantify what's rock v. pop.

I just learned something about Urgent the other day that I never knew. The synthesizer part was played by Thomas Dolby.

Well, despite the premier of Donovan and Billy Squire, that went over, in the immortal words of Keith Moon, like a lead balloon. Onward and upward as they say...

421 Gimme Shelter -- Rolling Stones-- I just changed this as a rapid executive decision. Based on Flying Swoosh's great write up here. http://csnbbs.com/thread-466773.html Anyway, I thought Swoosh would be part of the conversation.
422 I'm no Angel -- Greg Allman-- When tattoos were edgy
423 On the Loose -- Saga-- They're a Canadian band.
424 American Band -- Grand Funk Railroad-- They'll help you party down.
425 Tambourine Man -- The Byrds-- Another band that's practically extinct on Classical Rock stations
426 Chain Gang -- The Pretenders
427 It Can Happen -- Yes
428 Since Your Gone -- The Cars
429 Mississippi Moon -- Doobie Brothers
430 Heartbreaker -- Rolling Stones

I would place Gimme Shelter in my Top 3 of the Rolling Stones' library. And there's no way it's not in my Top 50 (probably higher) of all songs. I have to believe you'll have a generous portion of the Stones' songs on your list. Why is this one so low (your note about the flyingswoosh post even implies you might have had it lower)?

This is f'ing heresy, man.

Heresy, yikes! 04-jawdrop

I have to admit, swoosh's post really made me consider the song that I'd never thought much about. I guess from my side, it's a gloomy song, and I don't really reach for it. Nevertheless, it was absent from my list 10 years ago, so I was trying to get it inserted. I'm likely to re-order a few things after this go round.

Curiously, no one asked what song got bumped.

Moving forward
411 Grand Illusion -- Styx
412 déjà vu -- C,S,N &Y
413 TNT -- AC/DC
414 Against All Odds -- Phil Collins-- Have to have the occasional ballad
415 Taxman -- Beatles
416 Take the Long Way Home -- Supertramp
417 Long Cool Woman -- The Hollies
418 All She Wants to Do is Dance -- Don Henley
419 Money -- Pink Floyd

To me, the gloom is part of what made/makes it so wonderful. It tried to reflect and comment on what was going on in the world at the time (Vietnam in particular). I'm amazed it was off your list previously.

You implied something was bumped but it wasn't entirely clear. Now that you've confirmed it, I'd like to know.

My thought is that TNT might have to go lower.

Quote: This makes me wonder when/if you will introduce Steely Dan.
The biggest problem I have w/ Steely Dan is not to go too overboard with them.

I'd like to have had Taxman and Money next to each other. But I've much like John Lydon in my opinion of Floyd.

@ TNT
--love the song but will be interested to see where some of their other hits land in the list. What is crazy is that AC/DC is about as simple as you can get in rock music yet no one else seems to be as good as they are at what they do.
