Basketball Attendance
Main topic the last three days on Jonesboro Sports Radio is why ASU cant get anyone to watch our Men's Basketball Games.

My question is, are we the only one's who are way down, or are other league teams having similar problems getting people to games? The story was floated here that attendance is down Nation Wide, and Southern League's are the hardest hit.,

RE: Basketball Attendance
I'm actually not sure if all of our home games being televised has helped or hurt attendance, every game on TV our stadium looks a little more full each time but that could be crafty camera work.

I know I heard the stat floated that SEC attendance is at its lowest since the 1980's, Its strange to see how fans have pretty much vanished.

RE: Basketball Attendance
At this point USA's attendance is down 14.39% from last year. Not surprising since this is a really bad year for us.

Btw, since AT didn't answer your question, at this point Troy's attendance is down 29.39% from last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if most league schools (maybe except Georgia State) saw similar trends.

We had 2900+ @ the game Saturday. Retiring Jeff Foster's # likely had a lot to do with that.

I didn't answer because I didn't know the answer to his question. But you also have to take in account we had Mississippi state at home last year and that was a near sell out. And the fact our arena was new last year brought out more people. That newness has worn off some... Plus we are not doing well either.

RE: Basketball Attendance
Our attendance hasn't been great in a while, and hasn't even been good for a few years. I think it has a lot to do with not having a winning season since Capel got here, and not bringing in many quality opponents. No interesting names in conference except Davidson, and we've had 3 non D1 home games each of the last few years.

UTA is right around last years average, with Texas State, WKU and Georgia State left to play. Troy and USA were top ten crowds at CPC, which debuted in February 2012. UL-L was only 1,200 (which would have been more than the average at Texas Hall since at least the early '90's, if not mid '80's), but that was during a snow storm. Hopefully the excitement generated during the exciting Troy game and the USA win will bring them out on Saturday.

Ga.Southern's attendance is down and has been for a few years now. Of course we haven't exactly put winning teams out there either. I can remember back 15 years ago when Ga. Southern had nice crowds and actually won games.

WKU's attendance is creeping back up from the demolition McDonald left in his wake. Up this year over the last couple, but still not back to the 07-08, 08-09 numbers. But it is trending on the right direction.

RE: Basketball Attendance
Ours is down, especially after two 3 win seasons. We're averaging 2,189 this year. That's the lowest average that I can remember and I'm older than dirt. :) The 2010-2011 season was the last time we were over 3,000 with 3,176.

The statistics archives on the official Lamar site goes back to the 2004-2005 season. Attendance was 3,986 back then. With the exception of a couple of seasons around the last coaching change, we kept attendance over 3,000. We dipped below 3,000 in Coach Roccaforte's last season, 2009-2010, at 2,970 and Coach Knight's first season, 2011-2012, at 2,834.

I remember averages of 6,000 - 8,000, but that was in the 80's / early 90's. We outgrew two homes with SRO crowds at the other two places before the Montagne Center (4,200 capacity McDonald Gym and 6,500 capacity Beaumont Civic Center). 2,080 seats were added to the Montagne Center (10,080) one year after it opened due to meet the demand at that time.

Hopefully we can right the ship and fully utilize the facility. Basketball is a lot more fun with a big home crowd.

There have been some good crowds at a lot of the universities. I remember attending games at a packed Blackham Coliseum as well as some good crowds at the Cajun Dome. There have been some great crowds at Arkansas State, Western Kentucky and others over the years also.

WKU is down a little bit since conference play began. Western's average as it stands right now after the Troy game is 4,661. Last season's attendance average was 4,714. So a pretty minimal change from last season. However it is definitely up from the 2011-2012.

I don't think Westerns attendance is down...yes it's down if you compare the total today to the total at the end of last year. But we still have two Saturday night games and Sr night and all three usually draws a 1000 or so more fans than our average up till this point. Sr night is on a Thursday this year so that could affect the number slightly but considering between 6,000 and 7,000 on Sr night it still should be the 1,000 increase over where we are today...

other words Western should finish this season with a slight increase in attendance. My guess is between 80 to 150

Basketball attendance is down everywhere (in general). Here's a recent article on the SEC begging ESPN for help boosting their MBB attendance:

SEC CRIES HEP ME, HEP ME TO ESPN IN HOPES OF BOOSTING HOOPS ATTENDANCE NUMBERS

RE: Basketball Attendance
Even for those in this part of the country that enjoy hoops more than football, they still rather actually attend football games than bball games, because football is more of an event and is not just about the game. Fans budget for the tailgating and reunions with old friends for football season, then by time basketball rolls around, folks are broke. It's just the honest to God truth.
