Might as well go to Montgomery or Columbus, GA before you head to Troy. We have nothing special.

RE: Experiencing new towns
The best advice I can give anyone coming to San Marcos is to hit up the town square. It is filled with bars and restaurants.
Just the bars on the square (or within a block that I can remember).

Chances R - Dimly lit bar with Tabasco Popcorn
Sean Patricks - Irish Pub, Texas grub
Railyard - Outdoor bar
Valentinos- Pizza and Texas Craft Beer
Green Parrot - Bros
Rocky LaRues - More Bros
Taxis - Piano Bar
Chimis - Mexican food and margaritas
Triple Crown - Live music
Showdown - 30 years of smoke, cheap prices
Louies Seafood Shack - Craftbeers and crawfish
Vodka Street - Bistro food and drinks
Stratosphere - Hooka Bar
Barfish - shots
Club 141 - haven't been in awhile. dont remember
Harpers - Dark wood, british public house
Slackers - Shot bar, Louisiana-style hurricane machines
Veranda - Roof top patio bar
The Porch - Big u-shaped bar that looks out onto the square
Tap Room - Burgers and beer selection
Shade - Rooftop bar
Black Rabbit Saloon - Skiball and booze
The Vault - Dance club
Sinners and Saints - Hotdogs and hooch
Nephews - dancing and roofies
Rooftop - multifloor bar
The Marc (formerly Texas Music Theater)- Live bands.
Zelicks Ice House - long necks, random mystery kegs, horseshoe pits
Tantra Coffee House - Coffee, bluegrass music, homemade kombucha, and some craft beers

Root Cellar and Palmers have overpriced food, but they make their own booze.
Root Cellar makes their own beer
Palmers makes infuses liquor for their cocktails

Away from the Square that are other pockets of bars
North campus is picking up with-
Bobcat Nation - TXST themed sports bar
Burn Lounge - Hooka
The Tavern
The Den
Grins - Treehouse restaurant

Cheatham Street Warehouse (away from everything else, but worth it if you want to hear live Texas music)- epicenter of local music scene. George Strait, Randy Rogers, SRV played there when they were coming up. They serve Shiner Bock in Mason Jars, which is good in my book.

That settles it, Texas State will be on my "must visit" list as soon as we play them in San Marcos.

BBQ Hooks is the best.

Want something quick... Crows Chicken

Want a bar? Try The Brick in downtown.

You grew up not far from Troy. And have been a few times. Is Hooks your fav?

Hooks is delicious and every time I've been to Troy I've been to Hooks

The original Hooks is in Opp. It is a little hole in the wall with about 6 tables. Julia's is another place for great southern food. Probably the best breakfast in town as well. The Brick is good, but it isn't downtown. Trojan Zone is a sports bar owned by a former Troy basketball player.

RE: Experiencing new towns
My suggestion will depend on your trip plans because for us all away weekend games are 3 to 4 day trips with anything close to the Gulf 5 to 7 days.

Troy:
I agree Sisters is a must.
Stay in PC Beach it's a easy 2 hour drive and during this time of the year you get some great deals on rooms. $100 a night gets you rooms that cost $250 to $400 during March-early Aug. If you don't want to spend that and don't mind staying in clean but nothing special..other than the views you can get a room that opens to the beach and ocean for under $70. Still plenty of good family fun and a lot of bars and big clubs

USA:
spend game day in and around the city plenty of things to make a day of it and a must is visiting the USS Alabama

Stay at Gulf Shore if you like the beach..tourist attractions
If you want to enjoy great views, fishing, quiet and good eating stay on the coast or Dauphin island

UL-L
Game day and game night stay in Lafayette (out by the airport has some good decent price hotels) explore the history of the city
Spend the day(s) before the game in New Orleans it's a easy drive over on game day

ASU
Spend game day in Jonesboro downtown comes alive...some are saying 10 years but I noticed a big difference with in the last 5 years.
The day(s) before the game Memphis is my only choice. I never felt unsafe in Memphis no matter where I was at or what time of day or night. Some people are fearful of the city..I think it's overrated fear

TXST
a must is 3 days for this trip and 5 to 7 if it's a once in every 5 year trip
As with every other SBC game I'm going to say spend game day in San Marcos more than enough time to take everything in
Make your main base in Austin or San Antonio it's a 45-60 minute drive either way and try to visit both for at least one night. Austin for the music and while some people say the Alamo and the River Walk is overrated...we enjoyed both

ULM is the only trip we do as a 1 day over night

GST is the only SBC where I will suggest spending the whole stay at. For the most part Atlanta will have better hotel rates than any place you stay. This is the one trip it makes "money" sense on staying at a 5 or 4 star hotel if you are on a budget...the rates are more in line with a 4-2 in most cities.

I hope I didn't make any of you mad by saying stay in other cities but if Western was still on the travel plays for SBC fans I would have said the same...stay in Nashville and drive up 3 hours before game time then drive back.
