Non Scholly Men's Lacrosse
We've had a fairly decent Lacrosse teams for about 5/6 years. We were best under Chris Park but he left for UTEP. We won the LSA championship in 2011 and went to Nationals. Last season we were rebuilding with a very young team. Our biggest competition (not surprisingly) in the Lone Star Alliance, is UT.

New season has begun with a win over Texas A&M.

Next match is 2/8 vs TCU. We hold a 5-1 record vs the Frogs.

That's a fun sport, wish we played it around here about 30 years ago.

RE: Non Scholly Men's Lacrosse
Lacrosse is growing quickly - seeing more and more teams starting in the Southeast at the NCAA level. Want to say that a few SoCon and Atlantic Sun schools are pushing it further along and the leagues have a cooperative with one of the leagues running a men's league and the other a women's league featuring member institutions from the two, plus an affiliate or two.

While the group in San Marcos is a club squad, you are definitely seeing an increase in the amount of club programs in this 'neck of the woods'.

Believe that the University of Texas will become first Texas school to start playing D1 lacrosse - men or women - some point in the next 3-4 years based on what Chip Brown is saying.

I played club lacrosse at App State, fun times. We scheduled games ourselves based on who could offer a post game keg party.

After watching the video, we definitely have one of the nicer lacrosse fields in the area.

Isn't lacrosse considered like a rich kid's game?

I'm 100% ignorant on the sport other than it involves a stick with a net on it and a ball. Supposed to be pretty violent, though I bet they won't let you use the stick as a weapon.

I don't know that it's necessarily a rich kids game on its merits, but as the youth leagues typically make you buy all the equipment up front, it's a rich kid game by default. I loved playing and could never the called a rich kid but often joke it's a game that lets upper class kid hit each other while avoiding getting hit by better, poorer athletes.

Kid 2 houses up from me is on the TXST Lacrosse team and I wouldn't call them rich. Comfortable? Sure, but not rolling in greens $$$$.

Years ago Lacrosse was a rich kids sport. Truthfully, I think Hockey was the same way. Both have changed recently

TXST lacrosse stands at 5-0. Next match is vs UTSA on 2/20.
Excluding a forfeit by Rice (score recorded as 1-0) the Bobcats are averaging 17 goals per match.

Traditionally, yes, but that is changing. And as far as using it as a weapon goes, you can hit people with it, but not in the helmet, and only when they have the ball. You have to "play the ball, not the player". You can also do full body checks like in hockey. The most common tactic to dislodge the ball is the poke check, where you furiously poke the player in the bottom hand (or the ribs 03-wink) until they drop the ball.

I played Lacrosse back in high school up in Atlanta. The entire state only had about 20 teams, and we were one of the only public schools that played at the time. They had established leagues, had been playing for 6 years by the time they got to high school, and had the best coaches around. We played a rough, physical style game. The private kids played much more of a finesse game.

We all had learned to play over the summer and had a coach that played for Auburn's club team for two years.

The final score of these private vs public matchups would be 17-2, 15-7, etc... but man... those kids left hurting. The best part was watching their mommies yell at us/the refs/our coach for hitting little johnny, even though it was a perfectly clean hit. Apparently we were just a bunch of thugs (from alpharetta) which was pretty funny.

They tried just about every year to get a club team together at Southern while I was there, but it never really took form.

RE: Non Scholly Men's Lacrosse
After taking down UTSA 24-1, the Cats had a game last night vs UH that was held inside Bobcat stadium. Boys won 29-4.

They stand at 7-0 now and got ranked in the first MLSA poll at #25. They haven't been ranked since they won the LSA in 2010 and went to Nationals.

Hard part of the schedule still ahead.

Bobcats handle Tennessee 14-6. They play South Carolina tomorrow. Could go into Spring Break @ 9-0 if they win tomorrow.

They moved up to #24 in the latest poll. Second half will start with Florida State visiting San Marcos on March 23.

Used to watch the Duke Lacrosse team on television before they lost
a season.
Not terribly exciting to watch, unless you have friends playing; but students
seem to love playing lacrosse so would hope it grows.

Cats take down the gamecocks 15-4 to stay perfect going into the break. 6 matches left after they return.

RE: Non Scholly Men's Lacrosse
Dragging this back to the front page.

TXST has 2 losses to very good teams (FSU, Chapman.) Latest poll they were ranked #18 but tonight took out #13 Texas, 12-7. This ties them for 1st in the LSA Div I. However, TXST has a better overall record (11-2 vs 9-4) and the tie-breaker. 2 matches remain for the Bobcats before tournament play (where they got cheated last year).*

*Long story but weather played a part in that debacle of a tournament.
