The schools are going to start complaining more about travel and expenses with all of these far flung conferences. A bigger issue is that most state budgets are in deficits, and that affects funding for higher education. The states have began reduced funding to higher education so athletic travel budgets will come under fire.

It will just result in more non-revenue sports being shut down (mostly men's sports for Title IX reasons). No big deal.

That is a definite possibility. The problem most schools at this level have is their Revenue sports do NOT create much revenue. Decisions become quite difficult on funding and budgets when a school has high travel budgets that eat up an inordinate amount of Money. UAB is in trouble financially and I could see them take a different route in the next round of realignment.

It isn't that their revenue sports don't generate a lot of revenue, it is that their costs are higher, especially as they try to keep up with the Jones.
