Sorry, but its an argument that never mattered. Anyone that is interested in the Vanderbilt job knows the academic obstacles, which makes it less than attractive to other programs in the SEC. Penn State has a much larger football operating budget as well, which makes this move a no brainer for Franklin.

Anyone willing to take the job at Vanderbilt understands if you can win 7 or 8 games a year, someone will hire you like Franklin. But if you don't, there will be no one offering you anything like many of the other coaches that left that program.

Also, Vandy football broke even last year while Penn State football posted a $30M profit WITH sanctions.

Bingo! The larger picture....

I was being sarcastic.i know why he is leaving...to try to win a national title.

Penn State wont be winning a national title anytime soon. NCAA will make sure of that.

O'Brien had a very young core with a young QB, most of those sanctions will be done in a few years. Franklin is going to do well at Penn State.

You're comparing apples and oranges man. I know what you were driving at, but it's not comparable.

Or he could stay here and build his resume until he gets a job that he does have a chance. He will by far have his best team next year. 19 starters returning all his players and a manageable schedule. Why is Franklin considering leaving? If he thought he could win a NC at Vandy...he wouldn't even think about leaving. It was reported that Vandy is willing to match penn state offer.

The best he can hope for will still the NO Bowl. That's the point. At Vanderbilt, he'd at least have the chance of playing in a decent bowl each year.

I guess he could have went to latech and played in the NO Bowl...and I'm not talking about New Orleans. He turned down more money to go to Tulane. He turned down ULM before he took the job here. He is a smart man, he will only go where he thinks he can win and the right situation. He obviously isn't all about the money. He stated at north alabama for 7 years turning down several higher profile and higher paying positions. I think his family also plays a big part in where he goes and what he does. There aren't many but there are Gary pattersons and Chris petersons that commit to a scool. I personally think HUD is one of those guys. He has been given everything he has asked for here. He can make just as much money here. He will be at a million dollars a year soon but he doesn't have pressure. As long as he would compete here he would have a job. We are building him a $120 million in facilities and stadium upgrades. His salary and assistants salaries have gone up dramatically since he has been here. He does his own thing, our big boosters don't have there thumb on anyone's neck. As long as you win they donate and stay out of the way. They lend him planes, helicopters vacation homes and anything else he needs or wants. Lafayette is a great place to live. The majority of people I went to school with that were from other parts of the state and country still love in Lafayette after graduating. That's rare, most people go to college then go back to where they came from.

Money talks and BS walks. If Hudspeth gets the chance to cash in at Vanderbilt, which I think is a long shot at best, then he will. The coaching game is about timing as much as anything. You're not going to get an opportunity to go from a G-5 conference to the SEC very often. Upper tier P-5 schools like Texas, Alabama, Penn St, etc., would never even consider a G-5 Head Coach as a candidate. Tennessee tried it with Dooley, who failed miserably. He was in no way ready for a gig like that. A coach has to have success at a Louisville, Texas Tech, etc., before he can hope to land a job at one of those upper tier schools. Vanderbilt made a nice stepping stone for Franklin, and it could do the same for Hudspeth or somebody else. It could also be a career ending move.

Yep, someone should have told Urban Meyer when he left Utah for Florida or Brady Hoke that when he left Fresno State for Michigan that upper tier schools would never consider a G-5 Head Coach as a candidate. And then there is Gus Malzahn now at Auburn via Arkansas State!

As for Vanderbilt, for every Franklin there has been a numbr of other coaches that have left that program never to hold another head coaching job again. Yes money is a major factor, but there are other important considerations as well.

If Vandy offers Hudspeth, he is gone. Simple economics. However, rumor is they want the OC at Clemson - Chad Morris or Moore??

I'm wondering if Morris would be interested? Vandy isn't one of the 'good' jobs out there. It's a whole different animal.

Malzahn was at Auburn when he did though. Making 1,3 million per year as the hottest name in football.

I think he would be more tempted by a Miss St or Kentucky offer, than a Vandy offer.

If Vandy offers Hudspeth, he is gone. Simple economics. However, rumor is they want the OC at Clemson - Chad Morris or Moore??

LOL!!Obviously you know Mark Hudspeth well and facebook him every day!

I don't know him but I do know arithmetic. do you really think he would turn down $3mm?

Where does it say they will offer him 3million? Just because they paid franklin that doesn't mean that's what they will offer. Not how that works. Hugh freeze did not get offered what houston nutt was making

It takes a special coach to recruit players to Vandy.

You're thinking strictly money; there are other concerns as well. Mainly putting together a staff with a few weeks left in recruiting and salvaging what is left of Franklins recruiting class. He can't just run out and offer a number of partial qualifiers and get them through Vanderbilt’s entrance standards. Then there is the matter of budgets, without the 20 mil in SEC television money, Vanderbilt's budget is even less impressive in spite of their new commitment to athletics. Then there is the matter of family considerations, his wife might love the money but she is deeply involved in the Lafayette community. Not saying she wouldn't love Nashville, but she does have some input on his decision. And there is the risk that if he doesn't do well at Vanderbilt, he will not be able to parlay that job into a better position in the future. He already took that risk at UL, taking over a losing program and making it his legacy. Franklin is one of a few that have been able to parlay that job into a better college coaching position over the past two decades.

I'm not saying he would turn it down immediately, but if money was just his thought then he wouldn't have turned down the interview with Kentucky last year when they were willing to pay him at least double of his current salary or the Tulane job.

Turned down an interview, rather than an offer to coach, I assume. One does not go to the University of Kentucky to coach football unless you have ties to the program or you have no other good options. It's a coaches graveyard, for football. Basketball is King at that University and football will once every few decades contend to be in the top half of the SEC.
