How did this happen to Syracuse?
I saw that the preseason rankings came out yesterday, and noticed Syracuse is picked to finish last. This use to be a very strong program, one of the tops in the conference. How did this happen to them?

Syracuse did play Buffalo last year. And we beat them badly. So how would we have done any better last year? At least we did not lose to Buffalo like another certain program. ;-)

Syracuse should not be too discouraged. I'm sure the talent level of their team is not that poor. Last season was a fluke that may have had a lot to do with attitude. Once the season started so badly it may just been a combination of a lack of confidence, injuries, new coach, new system, etc... Still, it might not be possible to come back all the way in one season because of the before listed reasons. Take heart Orange ones. Our NBE conference is not as strong top to bottom as the SEC and you are not Vanderbilt.

Go Mountaineers!!!!

Syracuse has slid of several years now. If Rutgers starts to put several winning seasons in a row and UConn keeps improving, the SU will have trouble getting out of the bottom. These things can snowball on once proud programs(Illinois, Washington, Arkansas,Ga Tech).

Something that may be considered (Although I think it is too early to tell)...

Could Syracuse's fall be attributed to the rise of Connecticut and Rutgers?

Is the competition for new england recruits that didn't get picked by Penn State and want to play close to home impact Syracuse recruiting?

The rise of Rutgers.....that's funny.

Syracuse went 1-3 in OOC games last year: Buffalo (W), Notre Dame (L), Florida State (L), Virginia (L).

Rutgers went 3-1 in OOC games: Buffalo (W), Navy (W), Villanova [DIV I-AA] (W), Illinois (L). If Rutgers had the balls to play the same OOC schedule that SU played, they would have finished 5-6.

UConn also loaded up on OOC treats like Liberty [DIV 1-AA] and Army.

If anything, the opposite of your quote is true: UConn's and Rutgers temporary rise could be attributed to SU having it's worst season in a century, and the fact that both schools played a JV schedule last season.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I hope Syracuse does not turn out to be another Houston! With that said I am pulling for Cuse to make a comeback but I see some of the same issues present that happened at Houston.

Syracuse has indeed fallen on hard times. I hope they come back myself. We need all programs in the conference to be strong.
