Depending on who his staff is, I like the hire. From the south. From south ga. Players seem to love him.

I'm wary about this hire. I've heard really good things about Summers, but we're taking a risk in this one.

Obviously I won't know until this time next year but this seems like a big stretch vs some of the other candidates

Sounds like the same thing as last time happened with Pry. We just didn't have enough to offer to lure him out of what he feels is a good situation.

Then it was between Chadwell and Summers. TK probably felt the jump from Charelston Southern was too much. Summers has at least been at a couple of decent sized schools and can assemble a more proven staff. Plus at GS fit is very important as it can be a culture shock for the wrong person.

surprising pick, he must have had a great interview, sounds like you didn't get the coach you really wanted, so your AD went to plan B. I wonder if his familiarly with Georgia Southern, and his family is from South Georgia played into your AD's decision. Two years from now, we might be talking about what I great hire for GSU Summers was, but at this moment, its still surprising the AD made this move.

Summers had been rumored to be the new DC at UGA as Smart had formally reached out to him. He seems to be well thought of in coaching circles. Plus he knows Ga and Fl well for recruiting.

I agree with everything you say. I would assume that if the AD is hiring an unproven head coach, he's talked at length about what kind of staff the guy plans to assemble and what he plans to do offensively and defensively, at least to some extent. I have some sentiment toward keeping a ground-oriented option game on the offensive side of the ball, but what's more important to me is that if the guy wants to change things up, he has a plan that will utilize the players we have now as he transitions to his chosen system. He's following success and it's a pretty good rule of thumb not to mess with things too much when you follow a successful person. In other words, ask yourself "what would Willie do?" and do that (unless it's a wildcat formation direct snap on 4th and 12 in overtime). When you absolutely can't bring yourself to do that, stay as close to it as you can stand.

Just my opinion. Is he a good hire? I'll say the same thing I said when they hired Monken and when they hired Fritz: we'll know in a couple of years. There are no guaranteed great hires and there are very few that are guaranteed to fail.

His dad was a HS coach too, so combined with everything you mentioned you have to think he is a top notch recruiter. The OC hire will be pivotal for sure.

Yeah, after losing much of their offense in 2013, one of their fans told me McCarney didn't rebuild, he reloaded, with these apparently:

"I'm looking forward to building off the offense that is in place and continuing to progress with the defense."

I'm sure that statement is a disappointment to all you folks that were hoping that GS would give up its option roots.

No, we didn't want another flexbone coach.

No doubt his success/failure will depend on the quality of staff he hires. When App hired SS we immediately went after Nate Woody as our DC. We knew he was so important that we doubled his salary from what he made at Wofford, and made him the highest paid assistant we ever hired. Best money we ever spent on an assistant.
