Fake FG Question
Because in my feverish delusions it popped up.

On that FG fake, last night, one of our backup QBs was the holder and threw the pass. The PK was the "receiver" on the play. The FG unit is mainly D/ST guys, right? So, if not the PK, who else is/was eligible for a pass attempt in this situation? Anyone/everyone that's out there?

We used to be good at stuff like this but it usually would be on running plays and not on FG attempts. I'm not sure we've pulled it off since Ben Follis graduated after the 2011 season. Kid was a helluva punter and had also played TE in HS. I think he went 9/10 for his career. The last one was tried under Fran and it was like 4th and 17. He got about 13 yds though.

RE: Fake FG Question
A field goal formation is just like any other offensive formation, so all but the five lineman are eligible. You also have to have two ends cover the tackle.

That said, if the other team is rushing in FG formation, sending five guys out in the pattern is a recipe for a sack.

RE: Fake FG Question
Here is what I've always thought, If you are down when you knee or elbow hit the ground, why are FG not called dead as soon as the holder catches the ball. Last time I checked, their knee is down, especially with a fake FG attempt.

The Field goal is a different element and the holder is exempt from the knee down rule according to college football rules.

Exactly. Otherwise the ball would be dead where the holder put it down. Kinda defeats the purpose of the kick unless the holder squats down like a baseball catcher or the snap is direct to the kicker who then does a straight-on drop kick.

The exemption ends when he ceases to be a holder. On a high snap, the holder can come off his knee and go back down, but he's still serving the role of holder. Once he stands up and runs/attempts to pass, normal rules apply.

There's an exemption on contact with the center in a long snap situation during FG's/punts as well. It's how you can hear of "roughing the center." There are several differences in special teams plays and regular offensive plays.
