What he doesn’t understand is that this team is a reflection. They are this bad because of him. It’s his schemes, his techniques, and his players. He recruited these kids.

He's a bad coach and a bad dude, but that type of tirade is beyond common...

Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it should be. As the Rutgers and Kansas situations show people are far less tolerant of Bobby Knight techniques of coaching than they were even 10 years ago.

Maybe we only heard part of the tape and there is much more stuff that is much more worse then what was released.. I am with EmuSteve and think this may have voided his contract without cause and allowed Lyke to release him.. I am shocked at the words that was said...

You hired a guy who was used to coaching U-M players who'd never been a head coach, and then can't understand when the EMU ones don't perform like Michigan's?

I think she handled this the correct way and it allowed her to fire English, save the remaining games for 2013, see if English could had been the reason for the team poor play, quiet the many people who wanted him fired, get the HC search started sooner, release the mounting pressure to do something, and to put her 1st mark on her new position..

Beside, I am thinking there is more to this story..

Barnes wasn't even this bad. Boone maybe? I stated earlier that the team wasn't happy with him and now we know why.

It's not common. If you think this is the norm for college coaches addressing their teams, you don't know much. Sure, they use the f-bomb, they shout, they rip guys, but it is not common to go on for 3 minutes telling your players you have no respect for them or any of the guys you coached in the program.

English coached at multiple schools, not only uofm. He coached at a HS, a junior college named Mt. San Antonio and Northern Arizona among others. Yet you think he expected guys at EMU to be just like the ones at uofm. Duh yourself.

Okay, English spoke harshly with his team. I think it's the wrong approach. I think it's wrong as a way to try and motivate them. It's even worse if he believed what he said. But these were mere words. They weren't physically harmed.

At the Ohio game I could clearly hear him using the F word with his D from about 15 rows up, so it's hardly new. He should have been spoken to and then allowed to finish the season.

Well, based on the recording, English must have thought EMU's players were worse than San Antonio JC's then.

Well, here's the dealio, if you're already on the "hot seat" you don't exacerbate the situation by behaving like Coach English did. He knew very well, or at least should have, that his contract would not be renewed at the end of the season. This incident supposedly happened between the Ohio and Northern Illinois games; so, the writing was pretty well on the wall by that point. This recording may be indicative of a pattern of behavior. In other words, I doubt this was the first time Coach English had a tirade like this. Why do I say this? Because someone had the presence of mind to actually record this particular outburst. It must have happened before for someone to think, "I'm going to record it this time around."

Coaching, like a multitude of careers, is a pressure filled job. However, you have to be professional in your behavior. I am pretty confident that if I did my job poorly, or the results of my efforts were poor, and the company I work for was already considering terminating me and I behaved in similar fashion to Coach English the company I work for would expedite the termination process.
