RE: University names
I saw a promo for an upcoming basketball game between Lafayette and some other team .
I know They want to be called Louisiana but Lafayette may be better than ULL .

I could care less and maybe this Lafayette is a different school not sure .

Ironicly because wisconsin and Missouri are big enough to have many regional universities, but no clear #2 school in the state.

Minnesota is the state that really confuses me. Only 1 div. 1 school in the whole state and it has 6M people.

Missouri State has been pushing to be that #2 in Missouri and I think they will eventually move to FBS. They are the clear #2 in the state in terms of enrollment and sports but there are several other schools that are better academically.

There is nothing crazy about that... look at a map! Texas is bigger than what most people consider the "Northeast" as in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Texas is 268,580 sq miles

"Northeast" is 181,328 sq miles

The Northeast could add Mid-Atlantic areas of Maryland, Delaware, and District of Columbia; plus Ohio valley area of West Virginia and Ohio to its ranks and STILL be 3,300 square miles smaller than the state of Texas.

Population however, it wouldn't be close! The reason every conference wants to have northeast tv sets; there are a lot of people and thus viewer opportunity! Basically, the Northeast (75,273,989) has three times the population density of Texas (26,059,203).

In Alabama, there is

Alabama (main campus)
Auburn (formerly Alabama Polytechnic Institute - athletics were branded as Auburn long before the school was officially renamed)

After that there is no clear hierarchy. There are three directionals:

South Alabama (FBS)
North Alabama (Division II)
West Alabama (Division II)

Auburn's history usurps the East Alabama name from being used.

Then three public system universities:

Alabama at Huntsville (Division II)
Alabama at Birmingham (FBS)
Auburn at Montgomery (NAIA)

That doesn't even count the Montgomery and Dothan campuses of Troy, which are geared solely towards adult students and have athletic programs. Both are accredited as part of the main campus.

Then there are three public universities named after their town:

Troy (formerly Troy State)
Montevallo
Jacksonville State

The two public HBCUs managed to land some fairly high caliber names:

Alabama A&M (in the Huntsville suburb of normal)
Alabama State (Montgomery)

UAB and UAH have long struggled with their names - UAH has been more vocal about it recently, opting to be "UAHuntsville". Troy State actually considered becoming South Alabama State but instead just became Troy.

I don't know if we'll ever see a Central Alabama - UAB is part of the UA system and Montevallo has more in common with a private school.

Alabama Tech will probably never happen unless if Auburn goes back to being API.

Jacksonville State doesn't want to be thought of as a regional school, so it won't take East Alabama. Auburn actually began as East Alabama Male College.

The University of Mobile is private, and is not actually in the City of Mobile.

i was pointing out the ratio disparity not the numbers disparity.

the northeast has a 1:3 ratio for FBS vs FCS while texas has a 2.5 to 1 ratio

i think yall are the ones with an inferiority complex, your a private school no one cares about and the majority of your students are from out of state.

And UCF used to be Florida Tech, so dont act like new school cant take an old schools name

Eh, that makes it sound less prestigious.

UNC has been itching to get rid of "At Chapel Hill" since it was slapped on them in the 1931 merger with NC A&M College (NC State) and NC Women's College (UNC-Greensboro).

UNC Charlotte rebranded all sports teams to just "Charlotte" like a decade ago. School still goes by UNC Charlotte though. That's our next big fight, to get the "UNC" dropped and just go by U of Charlotte or something like that. It will take a student/alum push to get that accomplished, just like it did to get football started. Our current chancellor caved on football, but he won't cave on a name change so we'll have to wait til he is gone.

USF and UCF have moved past the thought of their names sounding small time. The obvious ones are Buffalo becoming New York State and LaLa being branded as Louisiana. Those two changes would big huge for their programs going forward. UTEP and UAB has gone by that for so long going by El Paso or Birmingham would just be confusing. Would UTSA think about going by San Antonio since they are new to the football game?

Central. Florida.

They have everything in the world going for them. Awesome location. Quality football team. Why wouldn't you just be Florida Tech or the University of Orlando?

I've been saying this for years and get slaughtered for it on the rivals board. UCF needs to become FTU again.

There is an FIT. FTU is still available. Let ESPN and the lay public call us what they want. In 5 years, FTU will be "Florida Tech".

Some directional names picked up the city instead .

For the schools without the option of U of state name or state name State what is the best option ?

Also Tech is not an option

UTEP is a perfect option for us... It can be phonetically pronounced. We have no problem with it.

UTEP is fine, though the classic Texas Western jerseys were great from the throwback game. Texas Western or Texas Mines would actually be OK names to go back to if ever they thought about a change.

Aside from the occasional Ohio Dominican joke, ODU has a pretty sweet thing going with the name; the university's name is the state's nickname ("VA: The Old Dominion") and a handy marketing tagline. Up until the early 60s, we were William & Mary's Norfolk Division.

Off topic, but this is something which factors into those "What States Do FBS Recruits Come From" lists. If you play half-decent football in Texas, you likely end up on the bench at a FBS school. If you play football in the northeast, you have a lot of non-FBS options, many of which are arguably more prestigious and better choices if you're not expecting a career in the NFL after college.

Exactly, and with the NFL looking and drafting more and more FCS players, going to a FBS school isn't exactly necessary nowadays.
