I forgot that we don't get to actually address the Dear Leader anymore), and he specifically mentioned the fact that practice reports started showing up on Internet message boards. The fact that he knew this disturbed me a little bit. I have always figured that athletic department people read the crap we post here (hell, a lot of teams probably have a "social media director" now). But the notion that a head coach would care about such things did piss me off a little bit. Am I way off base here? This was before Monken had lost a game, so I really had no predisposition to like or dislike him at that point.

...again...you have no clue....b/c I know....coach speak vs. real speak doesn't give a fk about it....all great coaches are like that....Bill Belichick

is he tired of having to deal with it???? absolutely!!!!

It's part of the job now.....he made the right move regardless of my actions....you haven't figured out the sadistic side yet have ya?

"Coach speak" was exactly what I expected when I heard Dear Leader get asked that question. I expected to hear something like, "we had planned to close practice eventually, so we could start doing some things that are specific to Texas State." Even if that's not true, that's what a good coach would have said. It conveys a sense of consistency and a detachment from fan / media commentary. To say some crap about Internet message boards instead was just amateur.

He's a first year head coach....you always got it right the first time, eh?

The guy is smart.....let it play itself out

edit: it's important that you know I am NOT affiliated with the university job-wise

I agree with that. I don't think the successful Todd Monken of 2015 or 2016 will handle questions like rookie Monken did.

And you've never been one of the people I had pegged as a USM spy. Ace Barker is the one I'm pretty certain about... he may even have admitted it.

Ace and Nugg are jokefest fodder....as the latter says...eeeeeediots

I really do love your enthusiasm...it's waning on the masses now....it's a bummer

USM fans, what is up with your bad fundamentals when it comes to tackling? I was surprised at the number of arm tackles and many times your defenders would drop their heads before impact and miss the tackle all together. That isn't talent that is bad coaching.

Also the kid you brought in as the backup QB looked a lot better. Stick with him and not the guy you started with.

I personally thanked a half dozen or so USM fans for coming and even got two big hugs from two older ladies dressed in yellow. Your fans are first class.

You guys will be missed and I sure hope both of our AD's get together and keep this series going. It genuinely hurts me to see USM in this predicament. Time to be like a Phoenix and rise stronger from the ashes. Don't give up, get that chip back and starting kicking some ass.

Sounds like Bob Toledo - he wouldn't take calls either. He only answered well-screened email questions.
I doubt that there's an athletic department in the country that doesn't have some flunkee monitoring its team's internet message boards.

That's awesome...I would've done the same if the roles were reversed.

Everything before the bold is a youth issue....Monk is figuring his role out now

....and he's getting it....know it doesn't seem like it, but he is.

Social media, overall, has a significant impact nowadays. Love it or hate it, it's not going away and it's only going to become even more important in the future.

I don't see that happening. OoC games are intended to be either tune ups or an opportunity to knock off a nationally prominent team. assuming that we stop the suckage at some point in the near future, this matchup just won't seem attractive to either of us. (that's also the same reason that it's dumb to want to play MS or UM, but that is a different rant)

realignment killed the rivalry. the collapse of our football program will bury it.

the very best of luck to our old friends from ecu.

Its a combination of factors I believe. Fedora apparently didnt recruit well in his last season. And ElL12 refused to play a lot of Fedora's players, playing a lot of the players that he brought in (who he recruited to play pro-set style, not spread offense that Monk has us going back to) so there was no chance for the juniors/seniors of this years team to learn anything.

Not to mention, i think the announcers said itself, we've got something like 32 players that were seeing lots of playing times that were Freshmen and Sophomores.

it was nearly obscene how quickly fedora blew town. truth be told, THAT'S why we went to hawaii that year; it was a very early bowl, and he wanted to get it out of the way as early as possible and go on to his new gig.

pappy and his staff of leftovers from the "where are they now?" file not only failed to hit the ground running, they hit the ground literally falling down drunk. so, it wasn't just a lost recruiting class, it was more like two lost recruiting classes. and those players we did get were almost perfectly unsuited for their roles; fedora's players were a poor fit for pappy's daddy ball style of play, and pappy's players are arguably not cut out for what monk is trying to do. perfect storm. it's like we disappeared for over two years.

you do understand that we're talking about 18 year olds, right? I'm absolutely confident you "yapped" a time or two when you were 18.

RE: Worst Nightmare Come True
From my upperdeck perch on the 45 yesterday...I got a pretty good view of the mess that is now USM football. I never thought I would witness what I saw yesterday. Almost every phase of the game had problems yesterday.

It looked as if the kids played hard..but..they just were outmanned. 2nd stringers were very skinny legged. I suspect USM has had 3 consecutive recruiting classes that were brought in by separate regimes that have just not meshed. It looks like USM is going to have to go after some JC players to fills some gaps next season and then get back on track with some solid HS recruits going forward gauged to the new systems.

I actually felt sorry for the kids and was glad to see Ruff call off the dogs early. Those players don't deserve this mess. I hope USM can get it back together. Good luck going forward. I hope ECU and USM can somehow find ways to play again. I have a lot of respect for their program.

No doubt. I was laughing at the appearance of that man mountain coach who showed up and how they all just stopped dead silent. It's clear they don't want to mess with him.

I don't think Fedora was a very strong candidate for any job until he won the conference championship game. He hadn't exactly set the world on fire leading up to the UH upset. Yeah, we were in one poll if memory serves, but Fedora was so damned inconsistent that I was fully expecting us to fall back down to Earth. The notion that he was basically planning his exit before that signature win just doesn't ring true for me. I also don't buy into the "Fedora hated Hattiesburg" thing, either. Every decent coach we've ever had except Bower supposedly hated Hattiesburg. I think that's a rumor fomented by our own administrators to excuse their own failure to retain talent. I don't think most coaches give a flip. If coaches really wanted to live somewhere cool, Army, Colorado, and Tulane would be football powers, not Alabama. I think Tuscaloosa is actually a suburb of Hell.

Yeah, that's pretty much my point - or one of them. if he had doubled down on the first conference title with a second (or at least a successful season), there was probably a middle tier sec job waiting for him. but he didn't. He blew town for a basketball school who's football program was headed for serious probation. I think he knew it looked bad last year, and punched his ticket any way he could.

I agree 100% on the inconsistency. 11-2, and the two losses were Marshall (almost understandable) and uab. beat uab, and it's the sugar bowl. But nooooooo. Couldn't manage it.

I agree with you, but for a different reason. Most coaches that change jobs do not coach the bowl game of the team they are leaving. They go ahead and move on. They have to. Recruiting is too important not to. The Hawaii Bowl game was the only game that would allow Fedora the opportunity to coach the bowl game. Whether he just wanted win #12 for his resume or just really wanted to coach that team one more game is irrelevant. This is where weakness in the athletics director position really hurt. He signed off on going to Hawaii when he should have done what was best for the program.

I'm not a bandwagon hoops fan.. I just don't watch much roundball, but the last couple of years, I've enjoyed watching our boys when the game was on TV. If I can get the game on the dish, I'll probably watch. I'm the same with baseball.

However, I don't care if we're playing tiddlywinks against Bama, I'll pull for the black and gold every time.
