Southern Miss won 27 games last season, 25 before the NIT.

It's more important to be visible (ie, beating ranked teams, getting ranked yourself, playing on TV, etc.). Therefore, the schedule is as important as ever in terms of at-large hopes, but not as much for RPI benefit as it is to play "name" teams or teams at least from "name" conferences.
I think it's a decent schedule this year, especially with Rutgers, New Mexico, LSU, and UNC on it. Next year will hopefully be even better (off to a good start with the Battle 4 Atlantis).
Wh does everyone include Rutgers when talking about the good teams we play?

That shows a total disconnect from the state if college basketball (granted, if we go undefeated, the RPI will take care of itself)

Good point. I guess because it's one of two high major teams we play at Bartow this year. Of the rest of our home OOC opponents, the highest RPI team from last year was Georgia Southern (267).
We had better be 8-4 or better (not counting the non-D1 nonsense) going into conference play or we won't have a good shot at postseason play.

I think it's a pretty good bet that C-USA will be, in the eyes of the NCAA tournament selection committee, a one-bid league. The conference tournament champion will be the only C-USA team in the NCAA tournament.
Frankly, I don't care about the NIT. I want to go dancing.

I forgot that Rutgers plays in the AACKKKK this year. They start Big Ten play next year.

It's too early to say. If our conference as a whole plays as bad as it did in the OOC games against good opponents, then yes. If we can get a couple good wins, and Tulsa, Charlotte, Marshall, UTEPand Southern Miss can do some damage too, I think we'll be looked at differently. The good thing about college basketball is the at-large bids are fluid.

It'll be hard to get an at large in this new league, but not impossible. UNC would look really pretty on our résumé

Let's just say for fun, we beat UNC and win Charleston. I think that'd put us in pretty decent shape for an at large barring a ton of bad losses. The same can be said for many other teams in the conference. We are going to have a lot of decent teams most years, just probably not a lot of great ones.

conversely, what if we lose in charleston, lose to UNC, and lose in our conference tourney? Say we end up with 5 losses total. Do we still get in? I'd think so..

It really depends on what the rest of the conference does. Looking at it right now, I wouldn't want to be in that position.
