ULM's Newsome - National Defensive Player of the Week
Isaiah Newsome Continues to Earn Accolades for Saturday Night’s Performance

Release: 10/14/2013

MONROE, La. -- One day after being named the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s National Defensive Player of the Week, ULM’s Isaiah Newsome has earned three more weekly honors for his strong play at Texas State.

Newsome was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday and also earned a pair of honors from the College Football Performance Awards. Newsome was named the National Defensive Performer of the Week as well as the National Defensive Back of the Week by CFPA.

Newsome recorded a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown with 6:09 to play in the first quarter to give ULM a 7-0 lead. Later in the game, Newsome returned an interception for 75 yards to put the Warhawks in front, 14-0, with 11:07 remaining in the third quarter.

He is the second Warhawk to ever tally two interceptions for touchdowns (two; Karlton Washington; Northwestern State; Sept. 25, 1999). He is also just the second Sun Belt player to accomplish the feat (two; Tony Lukins, New Mexico State; at Tulsa; Oct. 6, 2001).

The Petal, Miss., native set a new SBC record in interception return yards (146) and interception return average (73.0). Newsome broke the records held by Middle Tennessee’s Darin Davis who had 101 interception return yards and 50.5 yard average vs. Florida Atlantic on Nov. 27, 2010.

Newsome also finished the game at Texas State with four solo tackles, including one tackle for loss.

The Warhawks have the week off from competition and will return to the gridiron on Oct. 26 when they host Georgia State for Homecoming.

Well deserved. Without his work, TxSt wins that one.

As was mentioned, without him we lose. The second pic was a beautiful one handed grab. He is a converted running back and turned on the jets both times he caught the ball.

That's the story of a lot of football games: If this guy hadn't done this or that, the other team would have won. This game was just another one of that genre.

No it wasn't. Sorry Sot, I watched the whole game it was horrible football. And if you say different, then you don't rate in the unbiased book. Your offense was just bad and you guys know. 192 yards of offense, with 13 first downs. That = zero explosion plays, and that doesn't cut it in this conference C'mon man! TXState couldn't get out of their own way either. It wasn't just another game, it was really hard to watch. You guys need to get your act together during the bye week or you will lose another 3-4 games. You get Gstate next at home, and they almost beat Troy, so they better not overlook them. Then 3 on the road against the Cajuns, Jags and Troy. Last home game against the Red Wolves.
