Bull Run MAC Power Rankings

W6 Team Tier Change Game Comment
1 NIU 1 0 W 38 - 24 at Kent Nice road win in a rematch of last seasons MAC Championship Game. 700 yards of offense is a fantastic thing to do to Kent but giving up 400, and more than six per carry shows some defensive weakness.
2 Ball State 1 0 W 48 - 27 at Virginia Solid out of conference win against an ACC team that managed to open the season with a win against BYU. Ball State's Wenning continues to make his case for POY
3 Ohio 1 0 W 43 - 3 at Akron Ohio made Akron look like a cellar dweller and showed that there is little if any separation between themselves and Ball State.
4 Toledo 2 0 W 47 - 20 vs WMU The Rockets cleaned up their red zone performance and their penalty situation this week and the result was a convincing win over the floundering Broncos
5 BGSU 2 0 W 28 - 7 vs UMass Took the Falcons offense a while to get going but as usual their defense has no issues coming out strong. The Falcons smothered the UMass offense.
6 Buffalo 2 0 W 42 - 14 vs EMU UB is finally starting to consistently play like a mid tier MAC team. With a soft schedule in front3 of them there is no reason to think they can not win six or seven games this year.
7 Kent 2 0 L 38 - 24 vs NIU Nothing at all for Kent to be ashamed of here. They are still recovering Archer and still getting used to a new coach. The Flashes played the Huskies tight until the 4th quarter.
8 CMU 3 2 W 21 - 9 at Miami CMU gets their first FBS win of the season and breaks up the "Direction Michigan" futility which has occupied the bottom 10.
9 Akron 3 -1 L 43 - 3 vs Ohio Akron may have undid all of the positive momentum they had been building with a very bad showing against the Bobcats. The Zips have NIU next week before maybe a winnable game versus Miami.
10 WMU 5 1 L 47 - 20 at Toledo Last week PJ Fleck said he was not too worried about Western Michigan's struggles so far this season. After getting beaten like a drum against Toledo maybe he should start.
11 Miami 5 -2 L 21 - 9 vs CMU Miami played Central Michigan equal in every category except penalties. When a team plays as bad as Miami as been giving up nearly 100 yards in penalties makes a sure loss.
12 EMU 5 0 L 41 - 14 at Buffalo Ron English has to be on his last legs after getting thwomped by Jeff Quinn and the Bulls. EMU just became the last team in the conference that UB has beaten.
13 UMass 5 0 L 28 - 7 at BGSU Fear not UMass you play Miami next week and still have a crack at Akron and Western Michigan.

WMU has to be below EMU and likely below Miami. They are absolutely garbage.

Garbage indeed but probably still better than CMU. Especially with the game being at Waldo.

(At the risk of arguing over being the tallest midget at the circus) WMU may or may not beat CMU this year, but not sure how you could say that WMU is better than CMU based on their seasons thus far (which is what this whole thread is about).

Not that it really matters much to be arguing about the bottom of the rankings, but it's tough to beat WMU's resume for the worst team in the conference. 0 wins, blown out in every FBS game (except MSU who can't score enough points to blow anyone out), and lost to an FCS team who hadn't beat an NCAA team of any division in 3+ years.

RE: Bull Run MAC Power Rankings
Other than Nicols Wmu has had a brutal schedule. However I do agree that in this ranking Wmu should be rated at the same level as u mass and Miami or below. I'm simply saying I believe Wmu will beat CMU when they play later in the year and thus would prove to be a better team. That was not conveyed in my short message earlier so I understand the confusion.

I'd also like to add that I have no data or references to back my claim.

Not true. Akron still has to play @Miami and @UMass. Since the Zips have apparently folded shop for the season (outside of trying to set a record for personal fouls in a game), they may be the front-runner for the "Title" three-peat.

And CMU could beat NIU since we beat them last time around in Mount Pleasant. Doesn't make us a better team. The point is that WMU is 0-6, blown out in both MAC games, and lost to arguably the worst FCS team over the last few years. You are missing the point here.

RE: Bull Run MAC Power Rankings
National Ranking of MAC teams by Offensive Points Per Game/Defensive Points Per game.

Offense
17. Northern Illinois (42.2)
22. Ball State (41.3)
51. Bowling Green (32.0)
67. Ohio (29.8)
71. Toledo (28.5)
72. Buffalo (28.4)
109. Akron (18.8)
111. Kent State (18.0)
113. Central Michigan (17.7)
114. Eastern Michigan (17.0)
121. Western Michigan (15.0)
125. Miami (8.8)
126. Massachusetts (7.0)

Defense
15. Bowling Green (16.5)
33. Ohio (20.8)
51. Ball State (24.5)
54. Toledo (25.2)
83. Northern Illinois (29.8)
86. Kent State (30.3)
92. Massachusetts (31.6)
94. Buffalo (31.8)
102. Central Michigan (34.3)
104. Akron (34.7)
108. Miami (35.6)
114. Eastern Michigan (38.0)
116. Western Michigan (38.2)

Takeaways

-NIU, Ball State and BG are the Top 3 programs offensively. Even BG being known for its defense its still in the Top 3 on the offensive side of the ball.

-On defense, Ball State and BG are in the Top 3 again while NIU drops down to #5. Therefore I would have to say that after NIU and Ball State BG is safely the #3 team that is sporting a 3-0 MAC record.

-Ohio is #2 in the MAC in defense, #4 in offense. The Bobcats have outscored their last 2 opponents 81-3 and are increasingly looking like they will in fact as predicted contend for the East title. 3 OL starters were back for Ohio this week against Akron.

-Buffalo is OK if you look at their points scored and given. If you look at their schedule with WMU, UMass and Miami left to play they SHOULD hit 6 wins. Kent State, Ohio, BG and Toledo will be tough but they COULD get 2 of those games.

-There are 5 programs in the MAC that are sub Top 100 on both sides of the ball (Miami, Akron, CMU, EMU, WMU). UMass surprisingly is not one of them with an OK defense rated #92.

Keep in mind 70 of UB's points against are Baylor, a squad that is averaging more than 70 points a game (just put up 73 on WVU). Outside of that, and even counting OSU UB is at 17 points per game (and we had held Stony Brook to 10 regulation points they scored 13 more in OT's).

Scored is a different situation. Sure we have put up 40+ per game for the past two but our *offense* scored just 13 on OSU and 10 on Stoney Brook.

Remember that Baylor put up 70 against Buffalo, so they are working their way back down. Then again... Baylor puts up 70 on everybody...

The fact UB is only a -3 points on the season (pg) is something considering what Baylor did to us...

Buffalo is also hurt defensively by the 70 points that Baylor is hanging on everyone they play. Take Baylor out of the equation and Buffalo has only given up 22.25 points per game, good for 3rd in the rankings.

Not making excuses, it is what it is.

Take the Louisville game out of the equation for Ohio and the Bobcat defense is only giving up 13.75 ppg.....

I don't think taking out everyone's worst game in the MAC changes the math in Buffalo's favor that much. Every school in the MAC has played a bad game inlcuding NIU in close wins against Idaho and EIU.

Are these stats for defense based on final scores? If so WMU's ranking should be higher. A large portion of points allowed have come on fumbles for tds , pick sixes, and special teams touchdowns.
