I agree that some of those tactics might prove helpful.
An example of the problem with older UAB grads is what I encountered Monday. Was in a Charity golf event and played with a guy who is probably in his 60's, started his education in T town, and ultimately graduated from UAB, taking night courses while he worked full time. He actually got his diploma from Ttown and then a few months later received one in the mail from UAB. He is a BAM, through and through, and mentioned to me how much animosity he held against Gene Bartow for what he "did" to the Bear. People like this will never get on the Green and Gold bandwagon. As an aside, his daughter graduated from UAB as a nurse anesthetist and works there now; I have no idea what her loyalties are.

Ask that person if what Bartow said was true.

Unfortunately, Ill probably never lay eyes on him again. Truth be said,,,, I dont even recall what the Bartow-Bryant thing was all about or any consequences to Bryant/UAT that arose as a result.

As I recall the story line, Coach Bartow wrote what was supposed to be a confidential letter to the NCAA complaining about certain recruiting practices of Coach Sanderson in the B'ham area while Coach Bryant was Bama's AD. The "confidential letter" was "outed" (perhaps by a Bama booster's bribe to an NCAA official) and has been a favorite "bone of contention" between the schools ever since. Was Coach Bartow correct in his accusations? The Tide folks don't care. They just hate UAB for daring to accuse Bama (and the Bryant Athletic Dept.) of anything. Does it have anything to do with Bryant, Jr and his supporting cabal displaying benign enmity towards UAB football? DUH!
It is the "perfect storm" of the Crimson Theology in conflict with UAB, and the long standing anti-B'ham prejudice towards the city in our state (since the 1890s) which has led to it being bled down from over 350,000 in 1950 (when it was about the same size as Atlanta) to about 220,000 today.

There is no such thing as benign enmity. And even if you could (although you can't) make a case that enmity (hostily, hatred) can be benign (kind, good-natured, harmless), that's not the type of enmity Junior has displayed towards UAB football. It's been the malignant (virulent, invasive, deadly) kind.

I was thinking of "benign" as being subtle and not openly expressed to the public by publication. The other terms certainly also apply in its practice by that cabal. I borrowed the term from then Vice President Spiro Agnew when he spoke of federal policies toward America's poorest as "benign neglect". He certainly didn't mean kind, good natured or harmless.

This reminds me of a really long, tangentially related story about education funding in Alabama that I will now relate to the world using big words.
