EA Sports to stop production of NCAA Football games
Quote:Video game manufacturer Electronic Arts will not publish a version of its college football game next year and it may stop doing so permanently because of litigation concerning the use of the athletes' names and likenesses, the company announced Thursday.

How old are you? It is a video game that uses the likeness of people who are not getting paid for it. The grownups deservedly won this one.

Honestly they should just release the games with generic rosters. People will just go through edit and distribute the rosters, which is legal.

I'm sure a meltdown on OperationSports is imminent. Follow the link and refresh periodically for fun...

They do and have done so for years. The rosters in the game are either random names or just numbers. The issue in the suit is that EA made the avatars to be just a bit too close in resemblance, height, weight, and hometown as the real players.

EA should have just had generic and random avatars from the get go.

No more NCAA FB Games
http://www.ubbullrun.com/2013/9/26/47746...ball-games

I am a bit pissed because it is one of the few console games I would buy every year, well I suppose its time to start playing Madden again.

RE: EA Sports to stop production of NCAA Football games
you can't hate o'bannon because this is his legal right

however there has got to be some common ground here.

i think a very fair compromise here is that stuff like jersey sales & video games etc. (the stuff where the school sells the players name) goes into a trust fund

yeah delany says "we are not a minor league" but they have pimped as much money as they can out of their "student athletes" names with this kinda stuff.

i totally get trying to protect the amateur status, but the schools are just as much as fault here

This is just sad. Everyone has a lawyer and a hand out...welcome to the "grown up" generation raised on Jerry Springer, Judge Judy and MTV Cribs.

This happened with basketball too. When EA had college basketball, I don't remember if you could edit the names or not. A lot of stuff wasn't accurate on their game.

All proceeds should just go to providing need based scholarships to support the educational mission of the universities. Players can hang their hats on knowing that they are helping less fortunate students to obtain an education. Too many problems with giving them a % of revenue sales while on athletic scholarship. Next thing you know players will only want to go to the biggest fanbase.

RE: EA Sports to stop production of NCAA Football games
The reason the EA Sports announcement is huge is because they have settled with the O'Bannon plaintiffs, and the NCAA is the only remaining defendant.

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/09/ea_will_not_make_college_footb.html
Quote:Electronic Arts Sports and Collegiate Licensing Company have settled all claims brought against them by plaintiffs in the Sam Keller and Ed O'Bannon lawsuit over the use of college athletes' names, images and likenesses, according to a court filing today.

Terms of the settlements are confidential until presented to the court for preliminary approval, the filing said. "This settlement does not affect Plaintiffs' claims against Defendant National Collegiate Athletic Association," the filing stated.

Hell I'd feel special just for having someone look relatively close to the way I look on there, bunch of damn whiners. I quit playing NCAA Football back when the lastest and greatest was still the PS2 anyways so fark em all.
