If 90% of the posters believe X, I still might not accept it. This isn't an election with 'majority rule'.

We are having a big election Tuesday in Virginia where each vote is a tally and counts equally.

Forums are not elections.

Forums are best if 10 posters presents many different views and opinions and not try to 'follow the crowd...' to appear thoughtful, collegial, etc. etc.

If you want to turn this thing around, hire someone from the "Air Raid" tree. They have a long history of maximizing talent and overcoming recruiting limitations to help programs overachieve.

No hiring process is certain to work out, but the only head coach from the "Air Raid" tree to have failed was Hal Mumme at New Mexico State. It's as close to a sure thing as you can get.

My vote: Lincoln Riley, OC, ECU

cowboy - you think a guy who's lived-coached his whole life south of Mason-Dixon will take EMU job just to be a head coach?

It's worth a shot -- He's not making much at ECU, he's only 30 so he's not a hot commodity (yet), and FBS jobs are still pretty hard to come by.

As a public service to those still reading my comments... Ah, I'll be nice... I'll present some others' opinions.

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football...candidates

As I suggested in another post, there are a lot of schools already without a HC: USC, UConn, Mia (O), FAU, and I think one or two more. We could be up to what maybe 8 - 10 in 3 or 4 weeks.

Rob Ambrose who would be a good candidate, no an excellent candidate and certainly meets '79's qualifications: FCS winner, would be highly sought (that argues against EMU getting him), etc. but with the EMU Steve kicker:

He will either stay at Towson or maybe become HC at UConn.

But why are we discussing him here?

I'll bet dollars to donuts (or should it be donut holes?) someone(s) will come back in two years and say: "I told everyone we SHOULD HAVE hired Rob Ambrose" AS IF it was a realistic option (it isn't).

Folks when it comes to hiring coaches, as it is with recruiting, act as it we are operating in a vacuum. (my favorite is Hoopster: 'Why didn't we offer so and so?" My reply is always: "We probably did but he had better options. That's why." 03-idea).

Like why let reality get in the way?

Brain storm, 03-idea brain storm:

I know why folks like to discuss recruiting a year early or hiring a new FB head coach in September:

There is NO REALITY. Folks can dream and dream and dream because until decisions are made there is nothing or no one (except maybe me 04-chairshot) to argue against their unrealities...

End of post... 03-phew

If i had to pick a EMU HC and i had my wish, my $$$$$ is with Greg Schiano as the next EMU coach. He meets all the things EMU needs to send a message, proven track record, big name, know what he's doing, respected, I thinking he wants to get back into the game, and he will be hungry to prove he can still do it.. I know we would only have him for 2 years that is good enough to move the train a few feet forward..

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Schiano

To EmuSteve point, this is my wish and Christmas is only 7 weeks away..

There may be a lot of openings but how many of them would be willing to take a D2 coach? IMO, EMU should find a young rising star with. BCS aspirations that is currenly paying his dues in D2. He may not be a household name.

Tampa Bay is going to be paying Schiano a couple million a year to not coach.

Why would he take a quarter of that to coach EMU?

To get back in the game and he don't need the money...

If he gets another coaching gig TB won't have to pay him. That's the way most contracts are structured.

I believe that is partially correct or at least my understanding of COLLEGIATE contracts. I don't know how NFL contracts are structured.

I have a copy of Rob Murphy's contract (it was in the newspaper under a FOIA request). I might have had a copy of English's but it might be on an old PC.

The provision is that the fired coach needs to make good faith efforts to find suitable professional employment and that those dollars are offset against whatever the former employer owed.

E.g., a MAC HC making 500K gets fired with one year remaining and takes a job as a B1G position coach making 350K, then the firing school owes 150K.

That is my understanding.

To pivot back to EMU and English and Murphy:

If EMU were to fire Murphy or English, e.g., with 2 games left in the last season do they need to pay essentially 'damages', do they have to pay more than simply pay a coach for not coaching?

I'll need to check Murphy's contract for clues, but English's contract might be different.

P.S. Murphy's contract definitely has a lot of early termination provisions. Murphy leaves early and pays dearly. Same with a lot (all?) college basketball coaches.

I wonder if English were to be fired tomorrow, if EMU were to owe him a WHOLE SEASON'S SALARY for early termination??? I.e., pay for 2013 + a early termination compensation??

"Early termination" could be 12 months or two weeks?????

My guess is that English will remain on the payroll until his contract ends (I don't know the expiration date of college football coaches contracts). November 30? December 31? Some other date?

Why is the expiration date important.

Let's say, EMU had just won 8 games and someone tries to hire English before the last game or even a bowl game, wouldn't it be nice to get $ from English if he left before his contract expired and the bowl game?

That is what in fact happens, the new employer hires a HC before the coach has coached his last game, e.g., bowl game, with his old school.

RE: Potential EMU Football Coaches?
Early firing used to be easy many years ago.

Contracts were much simpler back then.

The MAC season usually ended the 2nd Saturday in November. There wee 11 games and no conference championships and few bowl games.

Recruiting visits usually the 1st Saturday in December.

A school would like to have a new coach on board quickly for the start of recruiting visits in Dec.

Now, December is essentially a 'wash out'. Coaches are hired in December.

Hopefully a new HC is on board for the start of January recruit visits.

To show how messy this can get, the Navy coach coaches his last regular game, Army/Navy, Dec 14 (!!) the week after the conference championship games.

We can only hope that Lyke has started the search process already.
