As for the Wolverines, I think everybody has clearly stated what needs to be said about their performance this year.

We can call this fair weather redundancy. When one team goes down you have four other available routes to the desired destination.

RE: im sorry but this is a freaking joke
This is exactly why I don't join in the "Pre-season polls should be abolished" sentiment.

Major movement like this each week is necessary to self-fix incorrect pre-season rankings.

Nebraska disappeared after one loss too. As they should have.

Clemson shot up with a big win over UGA. The polls are inexact...but when we judge by our eyes--good losses count and ugly wins hurt--then we get a more accurate predictor.

I just hope that my Nittany Lions get to burst Michigan's undefeated bubble and it doesn't happen against Minnesota next week (10/5).

Akron and UCONN are two of the worse FBS programs in the nation. Eeking out wins over both deserves a drop in the polls. Lets see how Big Blue holds up to the 4-0 Gophers next week.

i think the polls system sucks, but the standard has always been if you win...you win. it doesnt matter how bad that win was. we have beaten 4 teams (one of them ranked) and all we have to show for it is being dropped BELOW our preseason ranking

im sorry but is this for real?

They were overranked like the rest of the preseason poll. It is the same rubber stamped group on top every year no matter how bad they really are. It keeps the poor with the poor and the rich with the rich. Michigan only desreves to be 1 notch higher than an average ND who will loose a couple of more games this year because they beat them. So they are really not ranked as low as they should be. If they keep playing like they have they won't even be ranked at the end of the year when they start getting kicked around in the B-10 when that part of their schedule kicks in. 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 02-13-banana 02-13-banana 02-13-banana 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 04-cheers

i dont think 17th counts as over ranked, especially for a 4 win team.

If Mich had not beat ND, they would have dropped from the pollls completely.

it happened to iowa in 2009. Started out 17th in preseason. They won their first game against FCS Northern Iowa 17-16 but Iowa had to block 2 last second field goals to win. Voters treated it like a loss and iowa dropped to 36th!!! They did not get back into the top 25 again until they beat #5 Penn state at Penn State. Eventually Iowa got to 9-0 but was still the lowest ranked of the unbeatens at #6. Iowa finally finished 11-2, won the Orange Bowl, and finished where they should have at #7.

It all works out in the end. Be patient.

The BIG is awful and the top teams would get wiped by the top teams in the PAC, SEC and probably even the Big 12 and ACC.

If Michigan had lost those games, their drop in the polls would have been like the drop a man with lead shoes experiences after being chucked into the Challenger Deep...

Nope, that has never been the standard. Pollsters have always looked at how impressive a team is. Heck, Alabama won by 25 points and yet 4 voters switched and made Oregon their #1 this week.

And Louisville won their game by *70* points, and yet dropped from 6 to 7 behind LSU because LSU beat a much stronger opponent.

What is happening with Michigan is nothing new.

FWIW, despite the close calls, and the very generous home officiating versus Notre Dame, I think you guys are pretty good. I would rank you at about #12 right now.

are you kidding me?

so asu didnt jump into the rankings after the most controversial win of the year? or bama didnt lose their #1 rankings despite two sub par showings this year?

The only way Louisville will get into the top 5 is with those teams losing. They hung 70 points, but they did it against a nobody. They don't even play one single ranked team this year.

Alabama did horrid against a team they should have mopped the turf with. Only losing 4 votes for #1 is clear favoritism, I watched the same with LSU last year. We had the absolute worst offense I've ever seen, yet didn't really budge after beating crap Auburn 12-10. Granted, LSU looks like one of the most offensively improved teams this year so as I thought they were overranked last year, I think they are where they belong so far this year, and could probably be a rank or two higher.

Not sure about that… but Guiton clearly has the better arm.

I look forward to LSU smashing the Bulldogs this coming weekend.

and thats my point. granted michigan is terrible this year, but we are talking about taking the biggest drop in the polls for two consecutive weeks

how come LSU & bama get the benefit of the doubt but michigan doesnt?

Who cares where anybody was 20 years ago? Anybody who bases rankings or worthiness on what was going on 2 decades ago is a fool.

By the way, 22 years ago, Louisville beat Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl, just in case you really want to use that as a measuring in our case: it'll only work for us, not against us.
