Is this legal?
Quote:Those partying in houses near Old Dominion University this weekend could have some unexpected guests.

Following two shootings outside house parties near campus, undercover ODU police will be visiting a few houses this weekend to look for any illegal activities, Chief Rhonda Harris said.

I get their intentions, but how can undercover police enter homes without a warrant?

RE: Is this legal?
this is a standard practice with frats. police do a walkthrough which is kinda a joke cuz they have to announce it but IFC/NIC can have the legal authority to enter a frat at anytime with or without permission

Private homes? I hope the hell not.

Frats on campus property? Probably.

A frat house has no expectation of privacy. With the current big liberal gov't police state, you'd be lucky to get marinda.

ODU doesn't have frat homes on campus property.

I am wondering if it is a party and you "invite" them in and they observe illegal activity that they can then bust you.

RE: Is this legal?
a drug dealer can "invite" an unknown undercover cop into this house

im not sure how this is different with the lone exception of probable cause which I dont see in this situation

The article says that the parties are being advertised on social media outlets. I guess that's an "invite," but I feel like it's a dangerous abuse of power.

I agree. What is the probable cause that allows this intrusion upon private property. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

The only thing I can think of is that it may fall under the no "reasonable expectation of privacy" section of Search and Seizure. If you are having a community party maybe that vacates your "reasonable expectation". Still appears like a slippery slope to me, but I also would not want to be the party (pun intended) to set the precedent either way.....

RE: Is this legal?
It's just going to force students to make smaller, non public groups on Facebook and other social media. Besides, it's not really hidden knowledge where many ODU parties are held (hello 42nd Street....).

Plus, with other mobile apps like GroupMe the knowledge about parties isn't going to stop spreading.

------

The real issue at ODU is not the students' fault; instead, it's the fact that people from the surrounding neighborhoods are coming to ODU and getting completely smashed. Combine drunks, outsiders, college kids, and a few guns and things start going badly.

Of course, there are other issues as well (street lighting etc.) but many ODU parties have a ton of non-ODU students (native people from Norfolk, even the military) trying to attend and, in my humble opinion, that is the main issue.

Yep, the police did this back in the 90's as well. Heck, most parties we had an off duty cop at the house the entire time.

It reminds me of the legend that you have to invite a vampire into your home before he can attack you there.

They will surely stop the shootings by thugs the next neighborhood over by busting college students at keg parties.
