JMU Ice Hockey
JMU beat Mason 7-4 last night and we're up against High Point in the championship game right now. With one period and some change left to play it's JMU 8, High Point 1.

You mean that place where all the people that go on coach bus trips park their cars is closing? About time...

And this would be EPIC. Not gonna happen, but it's a pretty good location.

There is a poster on here who claims to have all the necessary pieces in place to make an ice rink in Harrisonburg...I think he's just looking for funding.

that was me. $4 million turns 3 acres into a 1 sheet operation with a Zamboni, 4 locker rooms, a warming room, a snack bar, a fully stocked skate rental and pro shop and a paved, lighted parking lot. I had two professional training organizations ready to move here that would've been the main income for it. You need the ice booked from 9-5 M-F or you won't make a dime. Unfortunately, I had a host of developers, lenders and business leaders (inc President Rose) who felt it wouldn't make a dime anyway. They all said I was crazy, tell me something I don't know...

Don't really follow college hockey but glad we have a club team. How would we fare against an average D-III team?

Bill- we traded some posts on the old board about this.

Was what you proposed back in the day a hockey/ice skating facility only. In other words, no other purpose. I feel like the only way for it to work would be as some sort of multipurpose facility. Any idea what it would add cost wise to put ice in the convo replacement? I know it would make it less quaint and create some less desirable basketball seats. Could you add ice to a to be built hoops facility for an extra $1M or $2M? Again, assuming it was designed from the get go for that?

If the arena is designed for it from the beginning, it shouldn't affect the cost too much. You're just talking about dealing with the dimensions of the surface area. If you have a large enough concrete area (and the hockey boards), you would add the ice when you needed it at the beginning of the season.

(Basically what I am saying is that if JMU were thinking of possibly adding hockey, they could work it into the new convo's blueprint at minimal cost. But I don't see JMU doing that. There just aren't any schools in the area that would be rivals and - I'm assuming - no area high schools to recruit from. What you really need is a stand-alone rink so that area leagues can form when JMU is not using the ice - which can't happen if JMU basketball needs the arena.)
