RE: Former TXST AD Thinks They Have No Business Being FBS
Thanks Rev, thats the point I was trying to make.
Missouri (an alot of these other P5 schools) are like that fat girl who occassionally goes out to the bar with some hot friends and then says "We spend the whole night getting hit on."

We, the SBC, may never be the envy of the SEC schools, but we can be the envy of many other
conferences. Additionally the SEC will not be on top forever, even though it sure seems like it
right now.

Yea, I think they will be on top for what amounts to forever. Sure you will get an occasional national champ from the other conferences, but across the board the SEC is king, and has been since they did away with voting the top teams as national champs, and top ten chumps.
The SEC has the athletes, facilities, and history to stay atop. No other conference has as many teams that have won national titles. It is just that simple.

But as hard as it is to believe, Alabama for all their championships were:
3-8 in 2000
7-5 in 2001
10-3 in 2002
4-9 in 2003
6-6 in 2004
0-2 in 2005
0-7 in 2006
2-6 in 2007
True, some of those were vacated games, but shows that even the best can
have some down times...including the SEC.

Look what happened to Auburn since they won. As quickly as Arkansas came into the picture, they were gone. LSU seems to be up or down each year, but always a contender. UGA is always solid but can't get over the hump that is the SECTG.
Individually they might rise and fall, but whenever someone drops off, someone else steps up and carry the conferences perception of being the top dog. Unless massive scandal breaks out for 5 or 6 teams banning them from the post season, it might be a while before anyone dethrones them as the best conference.

The SEC is a great football conference, but do not think for a minute that they will be that way forever.
Wasn't that many years ago that they were not. Some conference will rise up to take their crown.
Would like for it to be the SBC, but finances would say otherwise.

Akin to the thoughts of many "big time" programs.
Pompous nature? No the guy just sounds like a weasel and a jerk. That's the cleanest way I can think to describe it. Of all the non BCS schools he picks the one he use to be employed by.
Basically he apologized for saying it. Doesn't change the fact that that's what he actually thinks, regardless of his obvious attempts at flattery regarding TxSt towards the end of his statement. Yea, he seems to be a jerk.

well- the sec WILL always be a great conference because it will be made up of many state flagship schools. that doesnt mean that a conference like the sun belt cant someday be on that level. seems to me that the schools we have are all growing and one day most will be as large or larger than the "name" schools in their state so there could be many boise states in the future. I know texas state and uta are larger than most of the big12 schools and as time goes on and numbers of alumni increase so will their following. some old line big time schools may be eventually left behind, leaving room for some of the move-ups.

So does GaSouth have aspirations of being Ga Tech or UGA? Of basking in their afterglow? I thought not. And neither does TXST with any other TX university.
gsu95 is against GaSou moving up and is an overall debbie downer. One of those who still think FCS football has potential and playing in high school size stadiums in front of 8K is all we should want to aspire to. Pay him no mind.

Big 10 didn't want them.
My take on the SEC, the college football playoffs will dethrone them. The current system is flawed, and the SEC is the benefactor. While the national championship is not voted on directly, for all intents and purposes it is. The BCS formula is nothing but polls. They get a benefit because at the beginning of the season, half the conference is ranked in the top 15.
Their non-conference schedule is so weak, they never get tested. They played 56 non-conference games last year. 25% (14 games) were against FCS, whereas only 14% (8) were against ranked teams. They played more SBC teams than P5 teams. Then, since they stayed so highly ranked, when they beat each in the conference portion, they don't lose ranking because the other is ranked too.
That is also why a four-team playoff is not enough. I do like the idea of a selection committee, which should make the schedules tougher. Guarantee you that tougher schedules will knock the SEC down a peg.

Exactly. We really don't know how good most of the teams are, since they play so few good teams OOC.

I agree that a four team playoff isn't enough, but I think you are mistaken in your belief that a playoff with "dethrone" the SEC. Your observation about the non-conference games is interesting, but that has evolved largely BECAUSE of the polls. The IN-conference schedule is so difficult that it is downright foolish to play too many top ranked OOC games. Head to head competition in bowls pretty well demonstrates that a one or two loss SEC team is going to win over almost any other team in the country (yes, there are exceptions).
The SEC simply has too many top tier teams to be dethroned any time soon. There will be years when someone else wins the big one, but the SEC will set the standard for a long time.

RE: Former TXST AD Thinks They Have No Business Being FBS
How do you know they are top-tier? If they don't play anyone of quality in non-conference, they could only be the third best conference and we would never know. They actually had a losing record against the ranked teams they played OOC collectively.
I know how the system evolved. Relax, I am not taking a shot at the SEC. They are the big benefactors of the system, only because half the conference is in the top 15 to start the season, a ranking which is nothing more than a popularity contest.
Since their streak of NC's started in 2006, there have been only two blowouts. The rest were close games. That doesn't indicate dominance. Yes, they won the games when it mattered, but there is no one alive who should believe that at that level, small, insignificant things can change the course of a game.
If one thinks that there isn't an SEC bias, name one other conference where a team didn't play in the conference championship, didn't even win their division, but gets voted high enough in the polls to play in the title. You can't because every other conference would have the team drop several slots. Two top-five matchups in the Big 12 will see the loser drop lower than five.
Yosef, I honestly ask how you know they have so many top tier teams.
