2014 MBB recruit
@JamieShaw5: Satchel Pierce 7' C @satch1032 tells me Texas Tech, Kansas St, & James Madison are his top 3 and will get officials @VerbalCommits

This would be a BIG recruit for JMU. Not sure we have any chance against those 2 BCS schools, but it is nice to be at least in the conversation for players like this again.

This highlight video is of him at a NBPA top 100 camp at UVA.

Well, they are both Big12 schools, and JMU has had some history with Big XII players...and in particular Texas Tech. We could have Fred Boyd share that TT isn't the place to be, or possibly Dazzmond Thorton. 02-13-banana

(The again...we lost Jon Pfleka, a big PW who played one year for the Dukes before transferring to a Jr. College, and then on to TT, where he performed pretty well). And of course, we got Denzel Bowles from Tx A&M.

Who really knows why a player chooses a school? Maybe Satchel likes the scenery at JMU! There's no question JMU's campus is much more attractive than the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle or the barren wasteland of Manhattan, Kansas.

EDIT: Just watched the video...looks like a solid prospect, but perhaps not athletic enough for the Big XII....probably a sub in that league, but a potential starter and 2nd team all-league type in the CAA (depending on how MB uses him). He'd be a solid addition to the program.

RE: 2014 MBB recruit
we've been on this kid for awhile now. he almost reclassified and committed to us for 2013.

will still be tough to beat out BCS schools, but I think we have a legitimate shot.

Will he dive for a ball and really play "D", not just wait to block a shot? I don't want to mess up the direction we started last year. I want him to be a fit, not just a big man who has some size and talent.

You don't see too many true 7 footers diving on the floor...indeed, I don't think that would be prudent given the risk for injury and the fact you want a player like that upright to grab RBs and block shots. You can't do either one of those primary tasks if sprawled horizontal on the floor...but you can get kicked in the face.

I liked what I saw of Satchel's D...he doesn't have the kind of passing or offensive skills of a Denzel Bowles...but very few players that size do. But Satchel demonstrated an athletic ability and court awareness to be in the right position to make the RB, clean up and make the garbage baskets, and protect the rim while blocking the shots from smaller men.

If MB learned anything from last season's late success...and is developing an offense (and defense) based on a long, lean, active, inter-changeable number of players in the 6'4" - 6'7" range, assigning the primary ball handling and scoring to them (players like Nation, Cook and Andre) and then places an imposing big man in the post whose responsibility is to provide a physical presence protecting the rim...well, I like the possibilities.

This is exciting. I love the fact that we're at least in the conversation. 5 years ago, we wouldn't have even been on his radar.

Evidently, that camp was loaded with 7-footers.
