Tribe wake up call
On 7-29 the local H'burg newspaper reported Tom Yeager referencing JMU's president in a way that was clearly not complimentary and quoted Yeager referring to JMU's fans base as a "mob."

Many JMU fans are taking Yeager's child like rant, a confirmed recent CUSA visit to JMU and ESPN rumors as signs JMU is the next CAA member that is as good as gone...

What does W&M do if this is the case? I think the Patriot is a perfect fit for you guys...I like W&M as a conference mate by the way...

RE: Tribe wake up call
Big issue with the Patriot is full number of FCS scholarships for football, and allowing players to redshirt. I haven't kept up on what the Patriot is doing, but if I remember correct even with the addition of scholarships it's still not to the full FCS level and they haven't changed the redshirt issue. As a Tribe fan I hope our higher ups have contingency plans, but FCS football makes financial sense and the CAA is still the top FCS league. It will be interesting to see how things play out with all the rumors that swirl around...

Obviously, the 2013-2014 version of the CAA doesn't measure up to the 2006-2007 version. It'll get worse if JMU leaves but W&M will stay in the CAA. The PL is an option, has been for years, but it's a poor option for the Tribe unless we play CAA football and the PL for all other sports. The SoCon would be our best bet if the CAA decays to a Big South level.

I don't think it will have much impact to be honest. First, most have probably already dismissed JMU as gone anyway. Second, W&M can and will keep many of the state teams on the OOC schedule.

The idea of W&M being the only VA team in the conference is no big deal as fas as I'm concerned. We would be in the same boat anywhere else - like the Patriot - and as far as football, there remains our rivalries with UR, Delaware, Villanova - along with what I think will become a growing rivalry with a close-by Elon.

From all I have read, W&M seems grounded to help stabilize and solidify the CAA. For football, most like the additions and line-up - with or without JMU, it's a terrific FCS league. Basketball seems at least stabilizing. I like the newer adds of CoC and Elon - it sounds like W&M was very proactive in pushing both to join.

CAA ain't going away for a long time, if ever, and JMU is having difficulty getting an invite anywhere else. W&M is where it belongs and will continue to work to solidify the CAA. With Elon, Albany and Stony Brook coming on board the football league is more than healthy.

The Patriot is not a perfect fit for W&M. Other than selective undergraduate admission standards there's little in common, and their elitist Presidents cling to an Ivy wannabe perspective. Patriot football going scholarship has yet to make them anymore attractive, and they remain with only six football schools who are going scholarship. You have to think the Pioneer League will be more attractive for Georgetown as they grow even less competitive in the Patriot. If they go to 63 scholarships, allow redshirts, and dump the silly academic index then they might be more attractive to W&M, Richmond and Villanova but my guess is the three would only go together.

The CAA is the perfect fit for W&M and I hope it grows and survives. If we have to kick Hofstra to the curb to get Stony Brook and Albany as full members I say do it. Hofstra lost all relevancy for me when they dumped their football program.

Re: Tribe wake up call
Hofstra brings nothing more than rasslin' to the CAA table. I'd trade them this very minute for VMI and the Cadets aren't even in my top 20 wish list.

As far as CAA football is concerned, it's stronger now than any time before.

Re: JMU, if they don't receive a FBS conference invitation by spring 2014, they can shut that door and weld it. The bottom-feeder FBS conferences look to be tapped out and I've heard nothing about the better conferences wanting more SBC or CUSA programs to leave an opening for the entry-level FBS conferences.

The CAA has demonstrated great resiliency in all of this...the storm has all but passed so I look forward to conference growth or, at the very least, sustainability.

As a former CAAzone lurker, I've become somewhat interested in the future of the CAA. As I see it now, it is solid. The additions, both all-sports and football only, will contribute well in the mid to long term. Elon's football may need a few years to make it happen, but they'll be there.

CAA football is excellent so far this season and baseball was great. Mens basketball needs some work but CoC will help with that. CAA will continue to be a great mid-level conference.
