NMSU Basketball
NMSU added another 7 foot giant. We already had 7'5 Sim Bhullar who was the WAC Freshman of the Year last season. He has a younger brother 7'3 Tanveer Bhullar who just committed to NMSU. He still has one more year of high school before joining NMSU. To bad NMSU isn't playing in the Sun Belt in basketball.

So why are you posting this here? I'm not trying to be rude. I would like NMSU in the league for all sports. But I just don't understand what relevance this would have to the Sun Belt?

Well, for those with a little imagination who are thinking of which schools might be good to add as all sports members, this might be an interesting development.

It also might interest those who realize that the status of single sport members in their other sports ultimately affects the overall status of that school, and hence the Sun Belt.

I could go on, but why? Those who get it get it.

He is saying that NMSU could help the SBC with basketball ratings. I would totally agree that NMSU could help bridge the gap due to the loss of MT and future loss of WKU. They have a winning tradition in basketball.

Not trying to start anything, but Sim is really not that great. He is big, but not athletic, can't jump, run pass or shoot. He will do well in the WAC, as it is now, but as you saw in the tournament, he didn't do anything against a team with real basketball players. Maybe, as a freshman, he can develop those things, but it was really Sy and Mullings as players and Denver and La Tech losing in the quarters that made last years 3rd place WAC team successful.

Sim scored 38 points, grabbed 33 rebounds in 3 games against UTA as a freshman. Don't hate. He is only a freshman so to say he isn't going to be great is premature when he still has 3 years left. If he makes the improvements over the next few years he will be making millions in the NBA. He has a lot of raw potential and for him to average nearly 11 PPG as a freshman is impressive.

I wouldn't hold that watching party just yet. Yes he had decent numbers against us, yes he averaged 11 (only 11 at 7'5"?), but he has no athletic ability. He makes Shawn Bradley look like Tracy McGrady. If it weren't for the three second rule and possession changes, he'd never move.

It's easy to average a double-double when the next tallest guy, who is normally a giant, is half a foot lower. That doesn't mean you have skill. Again, without Sy and Mulllings, he would have been a yawner.

Are you still mad over NMSU beating you in the WAC Tournament Championship game???? Who won the WAC Tournament MVP award? Yeah that is what I thought. We know that Sim is going to be a great player. We saw him play every game last season. We know what kind of player we have with him. You only saw him play a couple of times so you have no room to judge him. So keep hating my friend.

If we can't "give you no crap" about last season, how about the last 50 seasons? Last season was not some rare down year. It was the continuation of 5 decades of garbage.

Nobody was hating on NMSU until a certain 17 year old decided to show up and start acting like an idiot. Nobody cared to even talk about NMSU because they are such a nonfactor. You are an easy win that the rest of the conference gets to circle on their schedule once every one or two years in one sport. Until you showed up, the only time NMSU was ever mentioned on this board was to talk about dropping football.

Instead of taking you ball and going home, you may want to look carefully at what I have said.

I have repeatedly advocated for NMSU admittance into the SBC for all-sports. A good budget, good fan support, really good performance all around would benefit the Belt.

I have said the reason your basketball team was successful was the guard play, not Bhullar. You overrate him. Without Sy and Mullings, Bhullar would have done very little. As it is, because he is 7'5" and half a ton, a man-on-man does not work as effectively for most of the watered-down WAC last year. A zone doesn't work well because Sy and Mullings were really solid in the 1 and 2. Without that guard play, a zone would shut Bhullar down because he has very little athletic skill. When NMSU played a team that could matchup, a la the NCAA tourney Bhullar was just kinda there: 4 points, 11 rebounds, 27 minutes.

Take it as a slight if you wish, but it should have been easy for Bhullar to average a double-double when he played Seattle, Texas State, UTSA and San Jose twice. As it was, NMSU was fifth in the WAC in scoring offense and 4th in rebounding (UTA was ahead), proof that he wasn't dominant. He is a good player, but he won't play in the NBA.

Again, who did he play on his way to MVP? 12-18 Idaho, 12-22 TXST and 19-13 UTA. This may sound sour grapes, but the championship game was the worst reffing I have seen in a while. Coupled with the most homertastic broadcast crew, it seemed the outcome was being pushed in one direction. There were rumors the WAC was doing everything it could to make the stay of UTA, TXST and UTSA as unwelcomed as possible. That game backed it up.

You will find, if you participate long enough, that I love UTA, but call it like I see it. I have brought controversy on our board because I don't look through rose-colored glasses. Sim is a good fit for your team for what he is. But he doesn't have athletic skill to move. Without that, he will not be an All-American or NBA player.

I'm not, just calling it like it is.

I'm being pretty lazy here, but can you tell me what NMSU is doing for it's other sports? Who is in the "other conference" Is it WAC olympic with no football? What about Idaho? I am less interested in them because I hope they remain football only.

Which is the longer trip? Moscow to Boone or Statesboro? Not much chance of a charter bus for the fans

Won't answer the NMSU specific question, though I do know their volleyball program won the conference tourney and their softball program was regular season co-champs.

As for the WAC, it is very watered down. UT-Pan American, Chicago State, Missouri-Kansas City, Cal St-Bakersfield, Grand Canyon U, Utah Valley are new members and only Idaho, NMSU and Seattle U remain. This is Idaho's last year, before they rejoin the Big Sky for everything but football.

Moscow to Statesboro by a little over 100 miles.

the wac looks pretty weak this year..should be a gimmy for nmsu..I see them having all sports in the sbc..Idaho is another story..they dont really fit anywhere except in the west. I think they will eventually be in the big sky for all sports. there are some pretty good programs in there and maybe some day the whole conference or most of them will make the jump. That's about all Idaho can hope for..or wait for a mwc team to leave and open a spot there.
