Football Playing Career Ends for Georgia Southern Standout
I generally do not repost what I've already put in our INsider section nor do I litter this board with things that belong in the INsiders section, but I'm making an exception with this story.
Godspeed Mr. Brown.
Football Playing Career Ends for Standout Brown
gseagles.com
June 5th, 2013
STATESBORO, Ga. – Robert Brown, who was a major factor in the success of the vaunted triple option at Georgia Southern in 2010, has been medically disqualified from further participating in football practice or competition, as announced today. As a junior in 2012, Brown played in four games to start the season, suffered an injury, and returned for one additional game in October before being sidelined for the rest of the year. He finishes his career with 2,063 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns as well as 11 receptions for 97 yards. Although his playing career ends, he will remain with the team and assist the program in another capacity.
Brown debuted as a freshman running back in the 2010 season opener at Paulson Stadium, rushing for 122 yards, the first time a first-year player had rushed for more than 100-yards in a game since Adrian Peterson in 1998, and the first time a true freshman had accomplished the feat since Joe Ross in 1987. His best outing of his career came in 2010 at William & Mary in the second round of the playoffs as he ran for a team-leading 178 yards and the Eagles’ first touchdown in the upset.
While his rushing total against the Tribe may have been his highest, the most memorable moment may have been his four-yard score against Appalachian State earlier in the year as the touchdown would prove to be the gamewinner in the victory over the nation’s top-ranked team

Yeah, this made my heart sad. With a completely healthy 4 year career he easily could have been one of the best backs we've ever had, and well we've had some awfully good people running the ball in our history.
Sad to see him go, but I suppose its for the good. Heaven forbid something happen to him on the field.

Sad when this happens to any athlete at any school. Hope he finds happiness in something positive and makes the most of what he has been given.
I remember hearing the words no more sports to this day. Tough on anyone.
Get well soon and find something positive in all this!

Was going back for that late game the nail in the coffin of his career?

No way to know for sure. After a stellar freshman year, the injuries seemed to continue to add up. If the trend continued, even if he hadn't come in for that game, it seems logical that it would have happened later. Just one of those guys that had bad luck when it comes to injuries.
Stinks too. He was a very talented player. But I think he'll do well in the future.

Happened to an awesome RB of ours a few years back. Injured his ACL but he came back 2 games later and played vs TCU. Re-injured it 2 weeks later (complete tear of all 3 ligaments) and was out a year. He was never the same after that. Had a terrible senior season.
We also have another RB, who will be a senior this year, who can no longer play due to injuries. Fran is keeping him on scholarship though; which I thought was a classy move.

He took a helmet to the back at Coastal in his 3rd game ever and suffered a lot of back problems from that point on. I think that's the majority of what his issues have stemmed from, including having surgery on it last offseason. He had concussion issues last year and was back for one game after his second concussion before they pulled the plug. He was never really back to full speed last year.
Sadly, I saw this coming several months ago. It doesn't make it any less painful to see a guy who worked so hard have things come to an end like this. Hopefully he'll be able to recover and not have any lasting effects from his football career later on in life.

He was a great player. We really haven't had him at his best since 2010. Sucks.

He was a heck of a player and gave us fits but he was fun to watch. Very sad when someone's career ends like this. All the best to him going forward.

Lost Derek Heyden in 2011 with a neck injury and now RB is done. Sucks losing these guys, especially when they had been impact players.
