I don't know if the MAC schools voted for it, but I don't like the idea of adding fixed expenses for this, especially ones that can increase dramatically in a short period of time.

fWIW--These divisions will not be made on a conference basis. They will be made by individual schools. If a schools chooses not to pay the stipend, they are free to do that and drop out of the top division. It could end up being very messy for the G5 conferences if enough schools opt out.

Why would it end up being very messy for the G5 conferences?
If a bunch of schools were to do that and many not do it, players would flock to those schools doing it. Would help their recruiting tremendously. Just another way the schools that are getting tons of money off college football can buy another way of ensuring that they get the best players and remain immune to being beaten much by schools that do not participate.

I guess it makes sense. The NFL is the only league without a minor/development league. The P5 could fill that role.

My biggest issue with something like this is that once they cross over that threshold they lose what makes college football so special. Maybe it was destined to happen anyway, but what makes college football so great to me is the close relationship with the school and players. I see those guys on campus, I sit next to them in class. Once they cross the line and become pro players (or at best semi-pro), that relationship is gone.

If they want to (officially) become the minor league of the NFL, then wait and see what happens to the crowds. Ever been to a minor league...anything? There may be some great play on the field, but the crowds suck.

And then a new divide will occur between the Texas' of the world and the Washington St's. I'll like that we are still true college football but hate that'll it'll be like FCS or worse all over again. You think a player will choose a "mid-major" just for playing time over money? I'm sure some will. Plus the elite players will want even more money and sponsorship deals. It's a mess now and will most likely get worse.

It is only a matter of time. Other than WF, Duke, Northwestern and Vandy about the only thing anyone in the Group of Five has in common with those 5 power conference schools is 85 scholarships and the same number of coaches on staff.

Way more teams than that. Notice he said major programs not major conferences. I would not consider a lot of the teams in the P5 to be power programs by any stretch. If the P5 conferences played only themselves only a few teams would rise to the top the rest would be just schedule fillers.

Sounds like the guy is just tired of being criticised and is lashing out a little. I don't think the majority of P5 teams want to separate into another division just to be dominated and have guaranteed bad records every year.
