We had a web site where you could suggest and vote for names. That was a freaking scary list. Some of the ones I remember:

ASU A's
ASU Farmers
ASU Express
ASU Engines
ASU Trains
ASU Locomotives
ASU Speed
ASU Reds
ASU Skeeters
ASU Ridge Runners
ASU Joe's
ASU Flying Elvi
ASU Conquistadors

I feared for my school during that time.

How the heck did you forget about the Ivory-billed Woodpeckers?! P-E-C-K-E-R-S means vic-tor-y!!!!

I think maybe my mind mentally blocked that...seriously.

Can you imagine other teams talking about our mythological peckers? The peckers we thought were there but weren't?

RE: ASU Gorillas!
This doesn't have to do with our nickname, but in the mid to late 90's, Troy's Chancellor made a push to change our name from Troy State University to Alabama International University. It was met with HUGE opposition complete with protests in front of the administration building. Needless to say he backtracked and we kept Troy in our name. The change to Troy University happened in the mid 2000's and came out of nowhere really and caught people by surprise. But most everyone agreed that the word "state" needed to go.

Why do Troy people hate the "state" name?

Makes us feel like a smaller university than we are I think. I don't know really. It does get on my nerves when we are called Troy state.... Some Troy people like state.

Troy isn't just a state institution. We have campuses all over the world. And state made is sound like a private university.

Troy is the 2nd largest university in the state of Alabama. Only slightly behind Alabama now.

State without an actual state's name isnt so good.

Red wave is WAY too much like the Crimson Tide.
We still have a few fans that refer to us as the Red Wave.

The Teachers would be hilarious. You could have a nun, middle age wasp and a seductive coed walking around with paddles in their hands. They could scream spankem!

Yeah, it does make it sound like a state school...but not THE state school.

Many people think a state school with the state name in it is the 2nd largest school in the state.

A state school without a state name in it sounds like maybe a minor state school to many....at least in 3rd place...maybe lower.

What he was meaning is that our name sounds like a private institution now rather than a state university.

The name change was two fold. To help with the unification of all our campuses all around the world. Secondly, to help eliminate the stigma that all our funding comes from the state thus encouraging people to give more to the university by making it sound like a private institution.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that aspect before.

Tarleton fans know all about the NTAC Grubbs..

Yup, they were our biggest rivals in the '30's to '50's and vice versa. Another rivalry that was the victim of conference realignment.

The low point was in the 80"s when our then President , a Bama grad, got our mascot name changed to The Crimson Panthers. I was actually a student when that nightmare occurred.
