This is not about Liberty. I understand that ship has sailed. I do love the realignment talk though. Just keep this in mind for all you JMU backers. JMU has about as much in common with the Sunbelt as Harvard does. They're an northern alumni school and I just can't see their administration lowering themselves to join the SB. Missouri State is a much better option in my opinion. They're going to have to get their attendance up for football. I think they only averaged around 8,000 last year.

About 70% of our alums are Virginians. Now, I fully understand that some of ya'll consider VA to be the North, but I'll fight you over it 05-nono 03-nutkick

75,000 alums live in the South (VA to FL and over to TX)...83,000 live south of the Mason Dixon line. That is out of a total of 110,000 alumni.

Virginia is Southern. Anyone who says otherwise has never been there. Most of the Civil War was fought on Virginia's soil. Only Yankee part of Virginia are the DC suburbs.

JMU is not Southern. Historically, Virginians see them selves as not Northerners and not Southerners, they are Virginians. They believe they are vastly superior to others, especially their barefoot, uneducated neighbors to the south.

JMU alumni want folks to believe their school is in the same academic league as W&M, URI, W&L, etc. They are still upset they couldn't get in UVA and believe in their hearts the UVA rejection letter was somebody's else's fault. They could have gone to VA Tech, a better academic and athletic university but they couldn't be seen associating with those red necks in the hills. In short, JMU Virginians suffer from conceit on the outside and inferiority on the inside.

Thus, their constant search for affiliations that confirm their imagined academic and social superiority.

Good luck JMU.

I think that, at least for the BOV at JMU, perfect has become the enemy of better.

Comes to mind there are at least two other possibilities with JMU's BOV:
1) They are intimidated or feel a kindred spirit for the academics that are against FBS.
2) They have thoughts of financial problems with the student fees being such a huge
part of the athletic income.

IIRC, here are the student athletic fees at selected public Virginia schools (mandatory)

Radford $2144 per year
Longwood $2022 per year

That seems like a lot. I wonder what JMU's portion is.

Don't remember the mandatory amount, but seems like the percentage of money brought in as student fees at JMU was @
83%. As I recall it is really high.
Doesn't leave much room for them to make many mistakes or spend much more money if that percentage is correct.

RE: Karl Benson interview from today about realignment
While people are quick to point out that JMU's athletic budget is edged higher because Virginia requires schools to include more in the budget than other states do, no one has pointed that out about athletic fees. From what I understand, Virginia is one of the only states that bans universities from using tuition for athletic expenses. That's why you tend to see athletic fees at Virginia schools other than UVA and VT that are at such a high percentage of the athletic budget.

On the other hand, I was able to learn from this link that JMU's athletic donations are higher than many Sun Belt schools (Georgia State and App State are not in the link because they weren't FBS last year). I was particularly surprised that Arkansas State's donations are so pitiful.

Also, people should probably stop believing that the JMU BOV shut down JMU's attempt to join the Sun Belt. A random poster on here not connected to JMU said that and somehow it has stuck. As far as I'm aware no JMU poster or any reputable source such as a journalist has heard anything like that. The BOV tend to be yes men for this kind of thing and will just go along with whatever the President recommends. It has been known for over a year that JMU's administration didn't want the Sun Belt so them turning the Sun Belt down should not have come as a surprise.

Yet stAte is currently in the process of around $30-$40 MILLION in facility upgrades to Football and Centennial Bank Stadium to include a 45,000 Sq Ft Pressbox and an Indoor Practice Facility and new Scoreboard, with Football Operations Center to follow . . I am good with that.

Go stAte . . Go SBC !! 04-cheers

Exactly. And by my vantage point, they've been the most successful program in the conference for the last few years. Perhaps it could be that donors just give more to capital projects at ASU? I don't know. It just shocked me to see that we have more than quadruple the donations of a top G5 school.

I don't think that data is indicative of what is really going on donation wise at Arkansas State, for whatever reason.

Hell, Boise State just donated 1.75 million to A-State Athletics!

Seriously though, a local bank bought naming rights to the stadium for $5 Million, and while that was a 15 year deal, the bank sold and upon closing stAte got a present value lump sum - late last fall I think.

Then, the president of the purchasing bank, an ASU guy, personally pledged $5 million for the press box/suites project.

Also Red Wolves Foundation funds were used to bump salaries way up for Malzahn and his assistants, and have yet to come back down much. State law limits what the school pays the head coach to well under $300K - and Anderson makes $700K. Add the assistant pool to that.

What is your point? This list you are referencing is dominated by MAC Schools. Twelve of the bottom twenty are MAC schools. So does that mean that JMU is too good for the MAC?

Obviously, since athletic donations are not a problem at your school, I have to assume that you guys just didn't want to compete at the FBS level and are using your academic standards as an excuse to stay at the FCS level. It is easy to act like you are better, much more difficult to prove it.

The point was that the "JMU doesn't have the money for FBS" is a fallacy. It has been made clear that they do want to compete at the FBS level, but are waiting for some perfect scenario that fits their criteria. I'm of the mind that JMU should have joined the Sun Belt instead of waiting for this "perfect" offer to materialize because it may never come.

Fbs footballs future is somewhat up in the air. Jmu has taken a wait and see attitude rather than assume fbs football will remain the same. However had the mac invited them perhaps they would have taken that chance. Since it was the sbc they felt is was not worth the risk. reasonable enough in my book.

They may raise more than some FBS programs but their leadership doesn't think they raise enough to make the jump. Funny thing is donations are likely to suffer by staying FCS.

Since such a high percentage of their sports income comes from student fees, and they cannot charge it direct tuition wise by state law, wonder if building a 1/2 stadium recently and the debt on that have the BOV nervous. Reading between the lines and what some seemingly informed JMU posters say, would agree with you Saint3333, think it is more a money problem than JMU wants to admit even to their own fans.
