RE: Hoopy Leaving
What Martelli the Elder proved is that saying nothing blocks a transfer from playing elsewhere more effectively than saying something that may prove your smallness of mind or purpose. Now we have those who try to figure out a good reason for his behavior even though there is no evidence today it was based on anything but selfish ego. We will never KNOW if O'Brien would have made a difference because we never had him for even one game. Martelli pointed out the "Achilles' Heel " of NCAA procedures by saying nothing.

We have O'Brien's career stats which show that he was nothing special but at the end of Davis's career, we were grasping for anything to assure us that Davis had a plan in his recruiting. O'brien was nothing more than an example of Davis's brand of desperation last second recruiting.

And while it is easy to dismiss Martelli as small minded, evil, or even a pawn of the evil BOT, it is also possible that he saved UAB from serious NCAA sanctions by keeping his mouth shut. Sanctions we would still be dealing we would still be dealing with even though Davis is gone. I always found it telling that the whole fiasco wasn't UAB vs Martelli. It was O'Brien vs Martelli. That should tell you something.
The Justin Knox affair tells me that there might be smoke there as well as rumors that Davis was calling our players after he was fired.

The Knox and O'Brien situations were attempts to move Cam from center to forward which would have been a big help to the team.

I thought that is why we brought in The Hamga.

It's the methods, not the motivation I'm questioning.

Davis got lazy in recruiting and didn't want to put in the work to do it. Its almost like he gave up in that area. Towards the end he seemed to be trying to prove how good of a coach he was by pulling rabbits out of the hat and win. That's why you need a young, energetic staff.

Which we now have. The future is bright, just hope we can pay them when the time comes.

In today's world, "When the time comes" will probably be too late.

Its my understanding that the BOT has to approve salaries at a certain threshold. I have my doubts they would step up to pay a basketball coach to fend off other suitors even if UAB went on a Butler- or VCU-type run.

I doubt XCMA ever got his contract bonus for the sweet 16 run in 2004.

Damn. That was 9 years ago. 03-weeping

He liked it here but once that happened and Missouri offered he left.

I had a discussion with a family friend a week or two ago.

Xcma is struggling to get the culture at Arkansas shifted back to basketball and can't get the players for his system like he could at uab and Missouri

It may have been because of the BOT, but it was UAB officially and technically who didn't pay him. There must have been a grey area in his contract that the BOT didn't know about when they approved it.

And although he may have liked it here, but he was interviewing long before he didn't get paid his bonus. We can't blame the BOT for Anderson leaving.

Sweet, if Haase does leave. Maybe Mike can just move back in.

I hope you realize that almost everyone in Birmingham knows a family member or family friend of Mike Anderson. And they all seem to be experts on what Anderson is thinking or doing.
