We live in a world where "Atlantic Coast" is a good name? Big 12 even though there are only 10 members and Big 10 even though there is 14 members.

Seriously people...American Athletic Conference is not really that bad. There is Pacific Athletic Conference 12..is it really that much different than that?

No takers so far. It is not easy to come up with a new, unique, descriptive name for a conference with teams located in the northeast, mid-atlantic, florida, midwest, mid-south, & southwest. There are schools who are public & private & even a national academy. There are schools located in huge cities down to a small city (ECU). In the future, another school located in a small city, Southern Miss, could join this new league.

Again, it is easier to trash the new name than give a good descriptive name that fits this new league.

I have made two posts already with name ideas in it so you are wrong.

GAAC, Great American Athletic Conference
This one suggests Greatness in respect to American. If you are going to appeal to American Patriotism, atleast go all the way with it. Also, the word great is like the word big. It is simple and easily identifiable with the idea of success. Could be shortened to GAC, Great American Conference.

NSAC, North Star Athletic Conference
For a conference that is anything but resilient, this name would be meant as a statement that the conference's history is not what the conference wishes to continue going into the future. Nothing is more permanent than the North Star.

NAC, National Athletic Conference
This is boring too but atleast the blatent patriotic begging is dialed down a notch to the acceptable level.

ECC, East Coast Conference
Technically the Gulf Coast is part of the East Coast so this one Would be a decent geographical descriptor of the current conference. Geography would definitely be hard to use for naming this conference.

This is all just off the top of my head and I am not a paid professional at this. The fact that there was an obscene amount paid out to "professionals" and the end result was the AAC....its damn near a crime.

North Star doesn't work all that well for me, but those along with EAC all work much better than AAC.

At least "The American" is a lot better than "Leaders" and "Legends". Those B1G division names are foolish.

American Athletic Conference is new name for former Big East, sources told @ESPN
So that's how they kept it a secret so long ~ they picked a name that people wouldn't believe was the name they actually picked.

"They're going to be called the American Athletic Conference"
"Yeah, sure they are. C'mon, if you can't tell me yet, don't just make stuff up."

So the new name is AAACCCKKKK!!! Makes me think of Bill the Cat. Conference kind of looks like him.

you get points for Bloom County reference!!

every school in the conference is in the Eastern half of the continental states. Mississippi river is not the halfway point unless you are living in the era right after the Louisiana Purchase...

Multiple schools not in the Eastern Time zone. What is your suggestion for the conference name.

Eastern half of the United States, nothing to do with time zones.

You really think Memphis, SMU, Tulsa, Houston, etc., are considered Eastern in any capacity? Does anybody in NY or NJ even think Cincinnati is Eastern?

You ever looked at a map of where the population of the US lives. Theres a clear dividing line between the east and west. Its not the Mississippi. The "East" pretty much ends about the middle of Texas. After that, theres pretty much is just open space until you hit California.

Yup. Even they agree. I think Delany said they are changing that.

?? That is nuts. The SEC is south eastern, the MWC is mountain and west,
why call a conference with teams in Texas, Oklahoma and W Tennessee an Eastern Conference. The United States is not just East and West.

Pretty low bar you're setting there. "The Ugly American Conference" would be better than Leader and Legends.

(04-03-2013 08:19 PM)He1nousOne Wrote:  As far as the SEC and ACC names? They represent where they started. The ACC absolutely started as an Atlantic Coast conference. The SEC absolutely started in the Southeast. Any additions out of those regions are periphery schools, their addition does not require a name change at all nor does that make sense.

The Atlantic Coast Conference was named as such to distinguish itself from the Southern Conference which those schools left and the SEC.

The ACC was a case where those schools were looking for more of a specific name like the Mountain West. The MWC expanded more into California as time has gone by.

The generic conference names like the Metro have largely ended up in the dust bin eventually. How long are names like CUSA and AAC going to last?

ODU, Charlotte, Marshall, WKU, MTSU should lead a breakaway conference and invite GSU, GS, App State, JMU, Liberty, FIU/FAU and call it the Piedmont South. Then CUSA can be the messy TX-LA-MS-AL conference it desires to be.
