Minnesota fires Tubby to hire Pitino?
Richard Pitino. The son.
Not a done deal yet but:
30 years old.
1 year as a head coach.
18-14 career record
Never taken a team to any postseason tournament
I'll admit that I viewed Pitino as a promising young coach who might be ready to step up to a bigger job in a couple of years after learning the ropes and having success on a smaller stage.
But to fire Tubby to hire Pitino now? Into the Big 10? I dunno.

Pitino Jr is a big reason we beat Duke last week. Rick said as much in his post game PC. He's a great coach and recruiter. Many of us hope he takes over once his dad retires. That's if we can't get Shaka Smart...which appears unlikely he'll ever leave VCU.

I like the hire...MN needs a young and energetic coach. Plus somebody who is a good recruiter.
Tubby really struggled in the Big 10 and he was getting paid a ton....he had to go.

Petino Jr. is no joke. He took an FIU team that returned 3 players and had them in the conference championship game at the end of the season. He will win at Minnesota.

Well if Rick said that about his son, then it must be true.

He actually gave specifics. Something about how they screen and based on the defense they played we should adjust the court location of our pick and roll. If you recall, we had great success getting to the basket against them.

He will win at a similar or slightly lower level than Tubby did. Then he will take a better offer, after his team makes an NCAA appearance.
It will be to a school that has a reasonable chance to win it's conference, unlike Minnesota.

I think FIU needs to hire billy gillespie to make the cycle complete. Pretty much the same resume worked great for Florida with billy donovan but it is risky. Worse case, minnesota fans will still have great hockey team in the winter, so that isn't so bad.

Pitino went 18-14 at FIU which is a record for wins there and had them in the Sun Belt conference championship game. I think they had something like 4 transfers that had to sit out this year too and a couple injuries so next year they'd be even better. Minnesota made an excellent hire.

That's not an FIU record. Pitino appeared to be a pretty good coach. But I agree with anyone who thinks Minnesota was STUPID for firing Smith to hire a 29/30-year old with ONE year of modest success/experience at a historically poor basketball school.
It may prove to be an upgrade in time but it's a very high risk fire/hire they just made. I mean, damn, Smith made the NCAA 3 out of the last 5 years. It's not like Minnesota is a basketball power. They're no higher than the 7th best program in the conference (UM, MSU, IU, UW, UI, OSU), and both Purdue and Iowa have something to say about even that claim.
Actually, I don't anticipate Pitino sticking around very long. Probably maintains status quo for 2-3 years before bolting again.

It's ironic Tubby replaced a Pitino at Kentucky and now 15 years later will be replaced in Minnesota by a Pitino.
