Hope you don't mind an NMSU fan chiming in here.

As most of you know we'll be playing an independent schedule in football this coming season. Although our schedule for next season is stacked with some relatively well known opponents, Minnesota and Boston College will be traveling to Las Cruces, independence is not nearly as attractive as it might appear to be at first glance.
The fact of the matter is that it's cost prohibitive for someone not named Notre Dame to consider being an independent for the long term. Our athletic director stated just this morning at our board of regents meeting that he had to leverage several long standing relationships in order to pull off the upcoming season's schedule and that he would not expect for people to be so accommodating in the future. In short, a mid major could pull it off for a year, maybe two, but being able to schedule five conference games where no financial guarantees are required is much easier to do than have to pay schools with much larger budgets to come to your house.

Anyway, I look forward to our return to the Sun Belt and hope to have the opportunity to interact with you guys on a regular basis.

Welcome back to the Belt . . . am hoping that you'll be FULLY inclusive, rather than FB only, before long! 04-cheers

Yes, the PAC 12 does care about "peer institutions".
Probably the same reason you are in the midst of getting rejected by cUSA.

Several months ago, the twitter was abuzz about Clemson and FSU to the Big 12, then it died I think temporarily. My thinking is that is not over and IF Clem-n-Son and FSU head west, THEN . . . Chaos !

I would like to see who ever comes on to be all in not just football. I would like to see NMSU to become all sport. They have a great basketball program and we need that to be added to conference since losing the WUKIES

WUKIES? I understand you are talking about WKU, just do not know what this means.

Kinda agree with you there if your school is hollering independent then they will be sad because they won't last long. Outside of the military schools, those lovable Irish guys, BYU. It is not attractive at all. Those teams have a following. Everyone else not so much.

Anyone thinking of going independent should talk with the NMSU and Idaho AD's.

If the new addition was for all sports, AND NMSU added all sports, that would be 13 for non-football. My guess is they would like to keep the 12/12 alignment. Therefore it will either be an all-sports add OR a football only add (bringing in NMSU's other sports), not both. That is, unless we are planning on kicking out UALR or UT-A any time soon. :bean:

Devil's advocate here. Being independent for NMSU and Idaho for just a short amount of time was all they needed to get a home for football.

While I'm not necessarily a big fan, I can see that independence, or the threat of it, would provide stAte and/or UL leverage. It's leverage we need to shape the conference in the most palateable form as long as we are here. You need us to play football so that you don't lose the playoff spots.

Since NT, FIU, MT and FAU made this a living example of a prisoner's dilemma, at the end of the day, aren't we really just every man for himself?

That won't be the first shoe to drop. The only way it happens is if the B1G moves on the ACC first. Personally, I think the Big 12 is more vulnerable (GOR notwithstanding), and that the ACC talk may be a smokescreen. The B1G doesn't need more football lightweights from the ACC - they could get Mizzou and Kansas (both AAU members) and shore-up their western front.
