JMU is by far and away the best option for the SBC

That seats 8,700.

Fan support for Richmond football pales in comparison to the actual quality of the program. It's really quite sad that the players there don't get more support.

Still James Madison, James Madison, James Madison

William and Mary would be a good alternative, but the nations 2nd oldest university in Williamsburg, Virginia, area close to ODU and the Tidewater think of themselves as Ivy League elitists. Which they probably are. W&M was given a chance to be in the ACC years ago and turned it down.
Georgia Southern fans can tell you some things about W&M. They rolled into W&M @ three years ago and beat them in the playoffs. Old stadium, but W&M has tons of money to make basically anything happen. Probably wouldn't be interested, but worth talking to them. ODU started as a branch of W&M and it might make them want to go FBS now.

It's too bad VCU doesn't play football so they could rejoin the Sun Belt.

James Madison will join and do well. Will be even a good basketball addition.

Anyone got any insight?

Here is the reason:

They went from playing at 22K City Stadium off campus. City stadium is quite the dump also, it is better off being tore down. Its also the stadium VCU was rumored about looking at if they started football. I doubt that even comes up at VCU anytime soon though since they are now in the A10.

To playing here:

Robins stadium on campus holds 8700 people. In contrast their basketball arena holds 9150 and they get more people in their basketball games. Richmond never has and will never have asperations of moving to IA.

While there is plenty of old money floating around W&M alum's, they can't make just "anything happen." Even if they were interested, the school would face a mountain of headaches trying to expand Zable or build a new stadium. Colonial Williamsburg and the historic nature of The College don't lend themselves well to building a place to seat 20K+. I'd say any on campus stadium would be a complete non-starter.

Was giving an alternative to if you guys decide to stay in FCS. Just anything but the other alternative. However, W&M could do it and be successful. They could dig a large stadium into the ground.

They just built a new on campus stadium....

That seats 8,700.

They went from a 22,000 seat stadium to a stadium that seats 8,700. Guess they couldn't stand the fact that City Stadium was always Bridgeforth East.

Of course I had rather have Richmond, heck I'd rather have The Citadel than JFU.

Absolutely. Do not want to hear about how un-Christian we all are if we do not believe the way Liberty believes. They vow to spread Christianity through athletics. Let them do it some place else.

Interestingly the Citadel nearly jumped to FBS in the mid-1990's (on the heels of a win at Arkansas).

My choices from Virginia are: James Madison, William & Mary, Hampton because they're public institutions. I would only consider private institutions as a last resort.

JMU is really the only option from this list.

Why would someone necessarily have to come from Virginia?

Best available options. At least until the western schools are willing to compromise on the Southland schools.

Nope. Sorry. Too much bad blood. Why should we compromise when they were not willing to compromise for us at the D1 split in the 1980s?

You see, this is what I'm talking about. It's very easy to stand in your shoes and say what you like to happen.

It's something totally different to have walked in our shoes and to see how bad (distasteful, in fact) that idea sounds.

As a former resident of Hampton, VA I can assure you that HU is not a public university. Here's my proof. HU is a great school though!

William and Mary won't join the Sun Belt. At least, I'd be quite shocked if it did.

I also voted for Richmond because the idea of Richmond being in the Belt is hilarious!

The idea of The Citadel being in the Belt though... Now that's a good idea! Best of luck!

All I hear is a bunch of whining. Grudges get in the way of pragmatism. What did they do? Shoot your dog? A grudge from the 1980s? Really? 01-wingedeagle

Wouldn't mind having The Citadel in the Sun Belt. I know the older members would probably hate that thought, but they have some interesting teams. Plus Charleston is a good visit. Probably doesn't help that potential of gaining that power spot too well though.

It's more than a grudge, we were forced to go independent becuase we wanted to stay D1A for football but their "all or nothing" approach to the conference wouldn't allow it. We paid a very heavy price for that.

So, if we don't feel like doing them any favors, that's our prerogative.

Not allowing those teams in now is, in my view, the very definition of pragmatism.

I wonder if you GaSo guys are even capable of seeing things from a perspective other than your own.
