David Teel reporting major A10 announcement Monday
@DavidTeelatDP: Another hit for #CAA. MT @GMUWashPost: George Mason and Atlantic 10 both making major announcements Monday. Not a coincidence.

@DavidTeelatDP: Hmmm. RT @DavidWoods007: Atlantic 10 announces Monday news conference for "major announcement" about its future.

Indeed. Finally the A10 will add George Mason. Great for them, VCU, Richmond, and the A10 in their effort to reload.

Great news for GW as well to get a natural rival. As shown in this tournament, the A-10 is a very good league and it's good for them that George Mason will be coming on to stem some of the losses. It can still be very good next year with Saint Louis, VCU etc.

The loss of Temple, UNC-Charlotte, Butler and Xavier coupled with the addition of George Mason will put the A-10 at 13 members. With St. Louis and Dayton still potentially on the Big East radar screen, it would be prudent to add at least one more. Who would be up next?

Colonial has been a jerk about schools leaving. They didn't allow Georgia St. to be eligible for the basketball championship. I don't recall any other league doing that. Georgia St. had a unique opportunity to move up in football so it wasn't like they were putting the league down by leaving. If there's any league that deserves the shaft in realignment, they are it. This is pretty short notice. There may be others.

The next add will tell who the A10 expects to lose. Adding a Midwestern school would seem that they think it will be SLU and Richmond or SLU and VCU to be gone.

Another East coast team and SLU and Dayton are gone.

1) One of the Boston schools (BU or Northeastern)
2) Hostra
3) Drexel

Perhaps Davidson can get into the mix if they really WANT to join us. But I think there really might not be enough interest on both ends.

I don't think that VCU or UR are really on the radar for the C-7, but ya never know. My guess is that Dayton and SLU.

They shafted us as well. We were the flagship of the conference.

Siena makes sense. They have been down, but still has pretty good attendance and play in a very nice arena. Not to mention the MAAC is set up for them to leave.

Siena seems to be one of the more committed schools in the northeast to upgrading their athletic program. fairfield and quinnipiac make sense geographically but might not be ready yet

Has College of Charleston withdrawn from the SoCon yet? The CAA is rapidly declining in basketball, and the football-playing schools might be out the door as well.

RE: David Teel reporting major A10 announcement Monday
I'm glad for FGCU. But lets face some facts here. They don't have much of an alumni base. They are way outside the footprint of the A-10. Their academic and cultural profile are a bit different than the schools in the A-10 (the SW coast of Florida is largely from the Midwest, not the mid atlantic/northeast). There might be some financial considerations as well.

I think there is opposition in some quarters in the A-10 to Davidson joining. And Davidson is closer, has more NCAA success, more alumni, better academics, and actually makes sense.

The A-10 isn't a national conference. It could have been had the Big East not split. But our future is in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast.
