Let's hope Stephens and Simms are on their games. Oh, and that we have a 5 run inning.

Wow. McCanna came back from 3-0 (with bases loaded) to get the strikeout. Pretty good composure for the Freshman. Now, let's get out of the inning with no more damage....and with the light still flickering.

I didn't mean a five run inning for them.

Okay, I'm outta here. We just gifted them 3 runs and counting on 2 ground singles, two errors (one on a would be inning-ending doubleplay), and bases loaded hBP and BB.

Since nobody is paying attention let me say that Georgetown has some 'splainin to do. And we left the bases loaded in the eighth.

UT losing 5-0 at Minnesota...right now the best team in Texas is UH. They will probably be the only one ranked next week.

I don't know about that. We have two games left. We win Saturday and Sunday, I don't think we go anywhere in the polls.

Tiki is right. We have not played good baseball all year. We have feasted on some terrible teams, often losing to mediocre ones. USM is having an atrocious year. If we do not turn things around soon, UH will have a field day with us.

Man, we love to freak out when we lose and laud the team with praise when we win.

Before we start crapping on the team and taking about the sky falling, lets wait until the series is decided tomorrow and Sunday. Baseball being baseball means that a single game against a single team isn't indicative of how we have played as a team.

Lets slow our roll. Now if we get swept by USM...

I have a conjecture that Friday night losses hurt you more than losses on other nights: i.e. LWW is more likely to cost you in the rankings than WLW or WWL.

It really is a conjecture -- not even a theory. I have reasons for why I think it is plausible, but I've never investigated to see if it's actually true -- and as I have pointed out many times in other threads, plausible and true are different things.

George, that really doesn't make any sense. Rankings, as well as RPI, are based strictly total wins and losses relative to the competition faced, with added weight given to road wins...and a penalty given to home losses. BA looks primarily at weekend series. If you won the weekend series you don't lose ground. Why in the world would it matter when those wins took place? Sure, it's true that your facing superior pitching on Fridays, but I've never heard of that having any effect on rankings.

Bottom line-- we need Jordan Stephens to step up tomorrow and assume the role of stopper. HUGE game tomorrow. Team needs to shake tonight off and come with increased energy and intensity tomorrow.

Bottom line -- you have little to worry about. Look at our schedule. We have been awful all year but are 5-1 on Friday nights--majority being blowouts.

We only hit when Pierce is throwing.

It is potentially plausible because pollsters are human beings, and human beings are not machines. From the times that I have hung around a pressobox, my sense is that as scores come in on Friday evening from around the country, people tend to notice and comment on any upsets. An upset on a Friday night can create an impression of "Gosh I guess that team wasn't as good as everyone thought", and that impression can linger even if the favorite goes on to win the series. But as the weekend goes on and more scores come in, people tend to notice and comment on individual scores less than they did on Friday.

As I said, I have no ideas whether that actually affects the polling on Monday. All I am saying is that it could. I said it was a conjecture, and it is a testable one at that. As in nearly all things, I am quite happy to be proven wrong -- heck, that's why I put it out there in the first place. But if there is anything that "doesn't make any sense", it is the suggestion (without any data) that no such human effect is even possible.

Not freaking out. Dispassionately looking at our performance this year. DBU, SHSU, Baylor, and USM do not have the strong teams this year that they normally have. USM in particular has been dreadful compared to past years. And they have all beaten us. We have generally won against very subpar teams, Hawaii (3 wins last I looked, Harvard (One win when we played them), and La Tech (well below .500 last I looked.), and a few average teams (FIU and Cal.) Our only name win came against Stanford, which appears to have been overrated.

Walt has with his usual eloquent style pointed out some of the failures. I agree with him.

Pitching is often inconsistent, and the hitting often disappears the moment we have a runner on base, especially in scoring position. And to paraphrase Walt, at this level, you expect players to be able to bunt the ball.

We can turn it around, but sleep walking through the season (yes, sleepwalking is a term others have used) is not going to get us to a Superregional. It is also not going to get us past what appears to be a very good UH team.
