Only one player from Birmingham in the NCAA tournament
I remember a couple of years ago having pride in my hometown when four of the starting Sweet 16 point guards were from Birmingham.

I did some research and only one player from Birmingham (Christian Watford at Indiana) is on any of the 68 rosters in the tournament. Why are we focused on recruiting locally again?

I also determined that, in addition to watford, there are only 5 other players from Alabama in the tournament.

Devin Langford at Illinois is from Huntsville
Kerron Johnson at Belmont is from Huntsville
Malcolm armstead at Wichita State is from Florence
Nick Williams at Ole Miss is from Mobile and
Nikon Hunter at MtSU is from Eutaw.

Pretty strong indictment of Alabama, and confirms that basketball is second fiddle. By comparison, the city of Memphis which is known as a hotbed for basketball talent has 20 players on 12 different schools, 6 for the Tigers. It's bad enough that no teams from Alabama are in the tournament. It's even worse that barely any players are in the tournament

Let Jon Solomon know. Maybe he can use that info to write a story analyzing attendance at high school basketball games.

Did you search just for "Birmingham" or also include the 'burbs (Hoover, Homewood, etc.)? Just wondering.

I went thru each roster. The players listed would also include anyone from suburbs. 6 players from Alabama.

Where has Scarbinsky been? I haven't seen an article by him in the last few days.

I would have expected an Alabama or Kentucky basketball article from him.

Solomon may not pick it up because there weren't any attendance figures anywhere.

Scarbinsky was AWOL on The Zone Sunday night as well. The AD from BSC sat in his spot.

Scarbo has been on my radio for the past week with Mr. Bammer Scott Griffin. WUMP has dropped Mike & Mike and have put the Griff & Scarbo show in it's place.

Yes, and I couldn't be more pissed about this. I thought about writing them, but why the hell would they care that I don't need to listen to anymore SEC talk then I already hear.

Yesterday morning they were seriously trying to talk about how underrated the SEC was and how Kentucky deserved an auto bid to the tournament because they won it last year.

Yeah, but you know that Kentucky only lost because they were disappointed to be in the NIT and just didn't care...

Kinda like bammer when Utah whupped them.

I actually like him. I enjoyed his afternoon show when it was on. I know they will answer my e-mail, but do you think it's actually going to do anything?

Dang, maybe I have it wrong. I thought WUMP had Mike & Mike. But they are/were on the 97.7 the Zone.

The bio I read said his hometown was Florence. If you expand it to playing basketball in Birmingham, then I guess Anthony Criswell is from Birmingham too.

Not the same, really. Armstead played two seasons for and graduated from Central Park Christian in Birmingham.

Maybe so, but the original topic was about players and their hometowns, and my material said that although he may have played in Birmingham, his hometown was not.
