Has anyone other than Len Robbins reported the Xavier/Butler/Dayton story? I haven't seen anything but other places quoting him. And the Dayton AD said it was speculation.

Quote: A report in the New York Post Wednesday said Dayton, will join Xavier and Butler as additions to the seven next season and Creighton and Saint Louis would join in 2014. But Lenn Robbins who wrote the story told our Doug Harris late Wednesday afternoon that he’d heard Dayton would be the last team him.

He said the reference was to the 12th team in, not the 10th.

RE: Big East to add Butler, Xavier, ???
Quote:The revamped Big East conference will include the so-called Catholic 7: Georgetown, Villanova, St. John’s, Providence, Seton Hall, Marquette and DePaul. Xavier is expected to also join the conference next week, sources said. Creighton has been mentioned by several media outlets as a possible 10th member, but The Star could not confirm that information Friday.

Creighton being the tenth team would allow a smoother transition for the a10 and avoid having to play at an odd number for a year

Creighton leaving would put the MVC teams at an odd number as well.

A10 could just as easily bring up GMU or whoever to fill the 12th spot next year.

Yes, it will be a good league. What about the St. Joseph Hawks? They recently beat Xavier.

The New Big East adds Creighton, Butler & Xavier, which means 8 of the 10 teams will have blue jerseys (only Providence & St. John’s don’t)

SLU says hi...they got to get an invite if creighton is in. I'm not sold on dayton as team 12, i'd go with VCU to balance things. Yet, i like going to 14 with dayton and another eastern school like umass. Thus, you got 11 catholic school's, 1 private and 2 public. Umass is the only football playing school with a home in the mac, no big deal.

Reading between the lines in that article: The C-7 is stopping at 10 for now because they don't have consensus on whether to stay at 10 teams, or expand to 12, or who teams 11 and 12 would be.

I think the issue isn't really about team number 11 which will almost certianly end up being SLU. I think the issue is team number 12 and in particular the BE's internal battle about inviting VCU.

I don't think VCU is as big as a candidate as some are making it out to be. I think Richmond has a better shot of an invite.

On Div1 standing, Butler and X gives the New Big East 6 for Men's Baseball, which makes the third Men's Team sport required of a non-football Div1 conference.

SLU lets the New Big East sponsor Men's Swimming, while Richmond would help the New Big East out with Lacrosse. Marquette will be annoyed at starting up a Lacrosse team to join the Big East Lacrosse competition and then see it fall apart ~ Rutgers next year would give them a 6th to act as a bridge, but there's no telling how long Rutgers would be available, and Richmond would give cover for that.

OTOH, SLU has an MCLA Lacrosse program, so they might be prevailed upon to take some of their new athletics revenue and start up a Div1 Lacrosse program.
