Sinkhole in the realignment road: UNC-CH?
It's not all THAT widely known because neither party wants it discussed, but the NCAA had decided on a two-year minimum TV ban as part of the sanctions against Penn St. for allowing their football program to gain such prestige and priority that it could (and did) conceal a Jerry Sandusky. It's a hammer that should have fallen...if it is ever going to fall again. So why didn't it? Because the B1G let it be known that if PSU received any TV ban they had the votes and would proceed to terminate the school's membership.

(Read that again and ask yourself if the Networks have attained FAR too much power over college football.)

Looking down the road at the events that need to happen to bring this round of realignment to an end, I can't help but think about the reckoning that may be awaiting UNC-CH over academic fraud (on the heels of their misdeeds strictly relating to athletics). The fact that said reckoning could come at the hands of SACS and not the NCAA could conceivably be making UNC-CH radioactive to ANY conference where they might have been a slam dunk otherwise.

Why would that hold back realignment? Well, if you're the SEC or B1G the last thing you want to do (other than invite UNC-CH only to have them become universitie non grata soon afterwards) is bypass the Tarheels, have SACS officially sign off that they're satisfied, and have the other conference snatch them up. Just thinking out loud about the possible impact that could be having.

The Holes aren't actually going to get hammered, so this whole theory is a waste of time.

Even so, all anyone needs to do is what to see what happens and then proceed. If UNC gets crushed by all, the SEC knows their move. If they aren't, then try to take them. Why does anyone, SEC or B1G, have to rush to make that decision before this is ended?

They sure will get the hammer, because of what they did the NCAA will have to punish UNC Asheville with 20 years of sanctions! God only knows what the NCAA will do to UNC Pembroke to punish the Holes!

Wholesale Academic fraud and abuse. Sports agents runners with free access to players and tutors. Players receiving cash and gifts. Sounds like a slam dunk case for a slap on the wrist by the NCAA to one of their darlings and money making machines. There might be some hold ups with Conference realignment but the fact the "Carolina Way" was exposed to be an absolute fraud...which most of us knew anyway...is not going to hold up realignment. UNC is the lynchpin for a mass ACC exodus. If they move there is no way the league has more then 3-4 teams left when the dust settles. If they decide to stay and remain King of the ACC and the Godfather of the Tobacco Road Mafia then the ACC survives and thrives.

Considering that a lot of people thought the program should have received the death penalty, the NCAA should have said, "Fine. Conference affiliation is not our concern. We call your bluff and are moving forward with appropriate sanctions."

The B1G is basically saying, we won't terminate your membership over heinous crimes, but if you impact our television network revenue, you are toast. But hey, we're doing it all for the student athlete 03-wink

The Buckeyes' problems were far more severe than for that which they were punished. Miami was off the charts corrupt with the strip clubs, yacht trips, drug parties, etc. Texas may wind up being to scale with Miami, but with clear internal cover up. Penn State was simply unthinkable. North Carolina is a clear cut case of academic fraud. And, there are others from all of the power conferences who are doing as much that haven't yet been caught.

Now add to that the public's refusal to demand an accounting for even more egregious sins in Washington, on Wall Street, or in some of our largest corporations, and you begin to realize my friends that it is not just the NCAA. It's us. We get what we tolerate because we tolerate what we get. When enough of us demand change it will happen. And the loudest action that gets the attention of those who make the changes is always economic in nature. Do not financially support that which sickens you. Sometimes that even means we have to withhold support from things we have cherished, like our schools. But we should always find ways to encourage self discipline in those things we love. It's the best thing to do for all concerned.

RE: Sinkhole in the realignment road: UNC-CH?
The NCAA had discussed a four-year death penalty for PSU's football program, too. PSU and the NCAA were at the table for several days over the consent decree. I don't know how accurate this threat from the B1G would have been, but I'm pretty sure that if the death penalty had been handed down, PSU would no longer be in the B1G.

As for UNC, the NCAA has practically washed their hands of them at this point. The academic scandal is huge, though. How that shakes out will have more implications to their accreditation than anything the NCAA could do, but based on reports in the Observer, UNC may not have much to worry about in that regard either.

UNC isn't leaving the ACC. If they left, then the ACC would crumble. However, they are not leaving. They don't like giving up the top billing status to enter the SEC or Big 10 and live in relative obscurity.

I'd predict nothing happens at unc regarding sacs. Now if the same stuff happened at coastal carolina, things would be different but that's life. UNC is basically citibank status.

All this stuff with SACS and UNC@Chapel Hill is simply another dog-n-pony show and nothing but a light besmirch on UNC's rep will come out of it.

However, I would worry a bit for Pembroke, as they could very well be hit with the death penalty. Asheville's safe -- that's where Roy Williams is from. Heck, given the incompetence at the NCAA level, they could see the initials "UNC-CH" and mistakenly ban UNC @ Charlotte.

I know you'd hate for a real besmirch on UNC's rep to happen. That would be really bad for your degree..... oh wait never mind.

Envy of what? Academic fraud? Football postseason ban? Football scholarship reductions? Football 3 year probationary period? Impermissible benefits from agents? Overall failure to monitor the football program?

What the heck should ANYONE envy based on all that?

Yeah, I wasn't really clear on the intent there myself. I'm sure most replies on this board are muscle memory at this point, though, so I'll give him a pass.

You correctly pointed out the hypocrisy of the B1G's position but I didn't make clear enough that the message sent by the B1G was not a plea for the NCAA to spare PSU a TV ban. You overestimate the power and credibility still carried by the NCAA.

It might be helpful to imagine Mark Emmert being escorted into Jim Delaney's dimly-lit office by Robert Duvall, then Delaney explaining to his friend that while he understands that disagreements can arise in all business arrangements, to see such a situation lead to such animosity between such good friends as the NCAA and PSU makes him very sad indeed...and he would expect everyone to refrain from extreme actions that they might come to regret in due time.

I think you, and many other posters who replied in this thread, fail to appreciate the nature of SACS...and how very, very little it resembles the NCAA.
