You would get virtually the same list if you headed it "LIST THE WEALTHIEST COLLEGIATE PROGRAMS AND THEN THE REST" A recent magazine listed the "Top 10 Endowment Schools" and only three public schools made the list and two of those were TEXAS and TEXAS A&M. The rest have to depend upon many millions in annual "charitable donations" to support their multimillion dollar programs. The two Alabama BCS schools won four straight BCS NCs over the same 4 years the schools had to hike tuition charges because their state led the nation in cutting public school per pupil support by almost $1400 from the state's ETF. Millions given to the two Athletics Departments don't translate to financial support for the whole school.

Nor should they. But it helps. LSU's athletic fund operated at $8.1 million in the black last year. Since they are a "non-profit," this lovely $8.1 million will be re-invested back into athletics or other university projects.

That is why Bama was able to completely replace its 10 year old conditioning facilities as shown on a local TV news report. If you take in more than you need, you just adjust the level of your "needs" to use it up. The ADs don't want the academic side of their school to get used to getting "athletic welfare".

So far as Texas and Texas A&M go, both of them get a small percentage of what the state of Texas receives for every barrel of oil pumped out of Texas land. This small percentage tends to equate to a rather large sum of dollars.
