ESPN Pres. talks BIg East, LHN, Fox Sports One.
http://blog.chron.com/sportsmedia/2013/0...challenge/

Couple of excerpts:

[i]"Amid reports that ESPN is on the verge of deciding whether to match NBC’s offer for Big East football and basketball rights and drawing closer to announcing its plans for a stand-alone Southeastern Conference network, company president John Skipper said ESPN remains committed to its Longhorn Network but disappointed in its limited availability.""

"As the University of Houston, meanwhile, approaches its first year in the Big East, ESPN reportedly has a week to match or pass on NBC’s bid to pay what SI.com describes as between $20 million and $23 million for Big East rights over six years. The league has been hit by rampant defections in recent years, but speculation is that ESPN could renew the Big East deal to fill in the gaps that will be created on ESPNU when it launches its SEC network.",

Skipper did not address the SEC project but said ESPN “will have an announcement pretty soon about not a particularly well-kept secret.”

He also said was “respectful” of Fox’s plans later this year to start a national cable channel to be called Fox Sports One. Fox attempted in the late 1990s to launch a news counterpart to ESPN’s “SportsCenter” but eventually abandoned the project.

“They have enough live product and expertise to do a 24/7 cable channel, but we’re happy with our position and confident in our ability, given the amount of live rights we have, the standing of our brand across platforms and the assets we have,” Skipper said. “We’re always respectful. I’m hesitant to say concerned, but it’s my responsibility to be cognizant of that and deal with it.”

That's an interesting twist. But how much programming is the SEC Network going to get realistically? And how is space on ESPN U comparable to space on NBC OTA (possibly) or NBC SN?

You have 14 schools worth of content so Id imagine that's 14 football games, 40-50ish men's and womens basketball games and a ton of baseball (which is huge in the SEC, bigger than basketball at many schools) plus all the other generic SEC stuff.

While NBC Sports has NHL, Ivy league and CAA games...although getting airtime on ESPNU might be better than NBC Sports.

NBC-Sports and ESPN-U are both in around 75-80 million homes. ESPN has less reach than NBC-OTA, but ESPN is a pretty good alternative (plus they have access to ABC if any nBE game ever warranted that exposure). Truthfully, I suspect ESPN would be interested in a small package of nBE games for weeknights, maybe a few replacement games for saturday ESPN-U, and some basketball for ESPN-U. I don't think ESPN will make a play for the entire nBE.

There are plenty of folks around Clemson that would disagree with you...
