It CAN be, but it's usually nothing as graceful as SIM City. ;-) There are planning offices with advanced computer modeling for traffic flow, long term engineering studies, environmental assessments... and in that sense it's possible to to really assess future impacts of communities. Ours is a regional office south of metro Atlanta, so the day-to-day work is helping local communities with rezoning decisions, small scale traffic impacts for new subdivisions, etc. It's fun to work with people and getting them to think of long term planning, but I make sure to keep things earnest, on topic and result oriented. I may be a government employee, but I'm concerned about govt. waste as well. We've used technology to downsize the office from 16 to 8 employees over the past few years, and our office has a rep for being exactly what the local govts. want it to be. After all, we want to make sure all those investments in sewer systems, new water sources and roads are done as efficiently as possible, right?

By the way, computer mapping rocks! 04-rock

BTW, props due to all the military folks. Many of my relatives served in the Army or Navy, including my grandfather who was stationed in KY for a couple years. (Armored div., WWII) He actually pressured me away from the military, but then he wanted me to be a priest... Regardless, I was often regaled with stories of time in the service, especially regarding two cousins(?) we lost in Korea and Vietnam. It's a special thing to answer that call, and I try not to fail in remembering such.

I agree. I have the flag that was draped over my great-great uncles' coffin in 1921 displayed in a prominent place in my home. My family has served in time of need since the Revolutionary War.

After spending the last 13 years there, I couldn't wait to get out. Smart growth is not the motto of most Atl suburbs. Believe me nobody leaves an acreage of greenspace untouched. 4.5 million people (and growing) crammed into the metro area is enough. Soon Chattanooga will be considered a suburb.

Smart growth is almost unheard of anywhere in the south. There must be something about the southern mindset that doesn't let it know how to even begin to approach intelligence in planning and design.

Thou shalt not design without a bottleneck.
