Wes Lyons commits to WVU.....
this is an example of how useless the star system is....but just take a look at the other schools who were offering...the final descion came down to WVU and Ohio St....The kids size and speed #s are eerily similar to Chris Henry's coming out of HS

Looks like a very solid player. I saw he has to retake the SAT to get eligible I guess. Does anyone know if they readjusted the scoring scale for the SAT from the old 400-1600 range? I know they added a writing section but didn't know if they changed the scoring or if its still a maximum of 800 on each section.

Also, does anyone know what the actual minimum SAT score needed is? We always here about players with eligibility issues but I don't know what the cutoff is. 740 seems horribly low but obviously plenty of guys have issues making a score.

Lastly, is WVU not able to sign Lyons possibly with the new regs?

The eligibility requirements are a sliding scale. It is a combo of the GPA for core courses in HS and the SAT score. The higher the GPA the lower the SAT can be. Click the link for the scale.

I know tOSU wanted him real bad. I am glad you got him, that opens it up for Latarius Thomas for Louisville. He is suppose to commit tomorrow.

Thanks.

So Lyons is okay. With a 3.0 GPA he only needed a 620, he has a 740.

Looking at that scale gives me even less sympathy for people who don't qualify. Not qualifying means 1 of 2 things, either 1) The student was incredibly lazy in high school if the GPA is worse than it should be, and in that case they need to go JC and put in the work, OR 2) If they have a solid GPA but cannot pull an SAT qualifying score that is still probably in the bottom 10-15% of the nation, there may be some issues at play that mean they don't need to be at a 4 year university. There are certainly exceptions, and also success stories at UofL and many other schools that take 1 or 2 partial qualfiers a year currently and graduate them, but the schools do have the responsibility to take students who can succeed. And the students are not barred from any college, just a I-A school, so they have scholarship opportunities still. I mean really, I'm honestly not sure how someone who can't get a 620 SAT is supposed to suceed at a technical college, much less an accredited 4 year university. Signing your name and falling asleep gets a 400.

-- Hey Maize...any idea what time during the day Thomas is going to commit? My bet is he's going to be a Cardinal

It think it is the afternoon, maybe around lunch time but I am not sure.

His main concerns according to his guardian were this:

Louisville: The Petrino to Oakland rumors
WVU: Their style of offense
MSU: Will Crooms last there.

But he has been Louisville to lose since around May.

Louisville is on the verge of landing two stud WRs in the closing days of this recruiting season. L Thomas being one and the other Josh Chichester, a four star reciever out of Ohio who committed to OSU last July. OSU has raised its entrance standards close to the level of Northwestern most likely due to the spate of bad pub they've had in recent years. Their loss appears to be our gain. The kid is 6'8 and could line up across the field from Mario Uruitta, he is rated the 14th WR prospect nationally by Scout.

That would simply be amazing. Urritia is also 6'8 isnt he? That would make 2 6'8 wide receivers. I dont know if any team would have that luxury.

Super Mario is 6-6 225. But I really expect this to be his last year in school if he has the year I feel he can. He is going to be a 3rd year Sophmore.

Lyons will give Pat White a viable alternative. If defenses have to fear the deep play action, that can only help the running game. And Lyons will probably catch a few bombs during the season. He came primarily to get instant playing time. I figure he'll do just that.

It may give rise to memories of Major Harris' option freeze passes to Reggie Rembert. Now there was a play to strike fear into an opponents heart.
