Georgia State University and the state’s medical college are big beneficiaries of $713.4 million in bonds recommended Thursday by Gov. Nathan Deal.
The bond package, part of the governor’s $19.8 billion fiscal 2014 budget request, includes $58.8 million for a law school building at Georgia State and $45 million for a cancer research building for Georgia Regents University in Augusta.
Georgia Regents is the name of the newly consolidated Georgia Health Sciences University and Augusta State University.
As usual, higher education dominated the governor’s bond package. Other highlights of that part of the package include $28.5 million for building projects at two campuses of Altamaha Technical College.
Of that funding, $15 million would be spent on a new academic building at the school’s Kingsland, Ga., campus. Another $13.5 million would pay for a new Altamaha Tech campus in Brunswick, Ga.
Infrastructure would take up another major portion of Deal’s bond proposals. Besides $50 million in bonds for the planned deepening of the Port of Savannah the governor mentioned Thursday in his annual State of the State address, another $25 million represents the next installment in the governor’s multi-year reservoir-building program.
Deal also set aside $11.75 million in infrastructure improvements surrounding the construction site of the new College Football Hall of Fame in downtown Atlanta.
Lawmakers will begin reviewing the bond package and the rest of the governor’s budget recommendations next week.
