Didn't know about this until this afternoon. All I can say about this, is that this is one of the major dominoes that needed to fall. Also I'm very happy about it.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: WJHL Reports Dave Mullins to be replaced as AD.
Not surprise.

Just the way these things work, seen it before. 6-12 months to asses (not just athletics) then dominoes start to fall as the new executive trims the fat and surrounds himself with people he knows, trusts, and or hires. Dr. Sanders seems competent enough for this transitional period but I would look for he and/or Dr. Noland to select a long term AD that fits the vision Dr. Noland wants in the future.

An exciting time ladies and gentlemen!

RE: BREAKING NEWS: WJHL Reports Dave Mullins to be replaced as AD.
Wait a minute, Kelly. Mullins took over as AD in Dec. 2002 after Stansbury went to Oregon St. Admittedly, he took over as an interim AD and then was promoted, but Mullins was the AD when football was dropped.

I will buy Stanton was the key factor, but as I said at the time, Mullins was the sort of AD you would bring in to cut football.

It's like Paterno. Did Mullins ever step up and say "We can't do this! We'll get kicked out of the SoCon! Look at the bylaws!"

The Guy actually extended Paul Hamilton's contract one month and cut the program the next.

How about how he oversaw DeChellis' lack of honesty and enabled it so Eddie D could go to PSU?

Disappointing article.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: WJHL Reports Dave Mullins to be replaced as AD.
Just checked in at 7pm on 1/14 to read all about this. Elated is an understatement. And, reading all the positive reaction on here is exciting to say the least. The method Dr Noland is using for this change is first class. I've been calling for a house cleaning (hyperbole) for a long time as a way to vent my frustrations while knowing all along that a good leader would, of course, follow proper professional protocol. The real class act here was to "allow" Dave Mullins to announce his "retirement" and make his own parting comments in his transition out of there.

Apparently, Brian Noland sees a sleeping giant here and wants to wake it up an get it in the race, with athletics playing a major role in that effort since he is starting with athletic change first. Remember, he ended his first State of the University address with -- GO BUCS.

This is a great day for East Tennessee State University. I second that Dr. Noland, GO BUCS!!!

Oh come on! The wheels were already in motion to kill football. Dave could have done nothing to really save it. He was hired for stability. He provided that, but it's time for the program to move up. That will happen.

66- I hope you're right. I do have a reservation or two; why put the Guy who saw three facilities built behind schedule on a committee for facilities. And guys, that's big. That could be a big error on Noland's part.

But it has yet to be seen what Mullins' role will be.

An athletic director is responsible for the department .

"Hey, Mr. Mullins. What do you think of Dr. Stanton trying to bring back football?"

Mullins: "People love this university!"

Telling.

Mullins isn't going to have any real roll, he is going to have surgery Thursday, be out recovering from that, which will take weeks and weeks, then hang around until the Tennis Center is dedicated, David Mullin Tennis Center anyone? and then retire in June without having done much of anything.

RE: BREAKING NEWS: WJHL Reports Dave Mullins to be replaced as AD.
Mullins was removed as AD. He will have little or no role in anything coming up. Wheels are already in motion the other way, and there's not much he or much of anyone else can do to stop it, especially considering the majority of those folks are for it.

All the trashing of Dave on this board got annoying over the years. Was he a good AD? In some ways yes, in others no. Marketing? Horrible. But he did get some facilities built that we needed for the sports we now are fielding. But some of the things that got attached to him were unfair.

Look - I get it. You need enemies to hate. Stanton? I see that one. Andrews? Yes, I see that one too. The Executive Committee that voted to kill football? I would see that one (which included Manahan & Bishop, I believe). But Mullins could do little as interim AD to stop that ball from rolling.

Football needs to be resurrected, but nothing like it's previous form. New stadium. New team. New coach. The campus sorely needs something to get behind. We MUST get the students there. Quit this BS about how "UT overshadows us." Gimme a break. Say that to Tech or MTSU. Now that tailgating is legalized on campus, that will help. Yes, with alcohol, and yes, our security will look the other way. Pour it in a cup. Keep yourselves under control. You can do that now for soccer games for Chrissake, but no one knows it because athletics didn't properly promote it.

Marketing needs to take off. ETSU as a whole needs to understand that marketing MAKES your university. It makes it. Changes people attitudes. Having no TV commercial doesn't help us. Oh wait - I guess we have one, but it's pathetic. Let's get real, and get better. Quit this colloquial crap and start thinking national. I have said that for years, but Pitt will claim it I'm sure and claim I stated something the opposite way some time ago. I'll agree with him on that lone thought: ETSU needs to think bigger.

We'll never hear from him again -- he's gone, let em call it whatever, bottom line, HE'S GONE, to NEVER be heard from again with relation to ETSU athletics.

Yes! The marketing game has to be upped by several orders of magnitude. It's all about that front porch and image. So much room for improvement here!

that's part of the reason conference affiliation is so important...better conferences have better marketing which in turn affects recruiting for all sports

Agree 100%. Where we land will quickly tell how far we need to go. I don't think Noland's vision stops at the socon or ovc.
