He was a Democrat from when a Republican couldn't get arrested in Alabama.

I was amazed at some of the shocked people when he switched parties. I remember saying, "Well, Shelby's finally come out of the closet."

That makes it any better? He doesn't have any courage of his convictions.

Not at all. He's a pure political animal. Whether or not to like him depends on whether he's spread a little pork your way.

RE: Senators voting against the Cliff Deal
The Democrats got wiped out in the congressional midterms of 1994 (Tuesday, November 8th), and Shelby announced his party-switch the very next day (Wednesday, November 9th). So he was continuously a part of the majority-party from the time of his election to the US House in November 1978 until Senator Jeffords switched away from the GOP in May 2001.

That's funny, actually. The economy was doing great under Clinton, with a Republican Congress. Who do they credit? Clinton. Now it's doing sh*tty under Obama. Who do they blame? A republican minority. Partisanship. It's what's for dinner.

Actually GW Bush and his Republican majority but what's accuracy matter in an internet argument anyway?
