Haven't done this for a few years, but this is what we'd have w/ a playoff.

My conditions:
1. All conf champs can qualify if: .750 record or better, at least one OOC FCS win. If a conf champ doesn't meet these (Wisconsin), conf can substitute another team that does.

2. Remaining slots filled based on BCS ranking.

3. Pairings announced on a selection program, initial round based largely on proximity of teams.

4. Games played thru Dec, culminating on Jan 1. Several bowl games expected to continue, allowing post season for non-playoff teams, AND to serve as warm up for NYD championship game!

This year's first round:

Notre Dame v
N. Illinois

UNL v
Kansas State

UGa v
Fla St

Florida v
L'ville


Alabama v
Ark State

LSU v
Tulsa

Stanford v
Boise St

Utah St v
Oregon

Not a bad set of games. S Carolina, Okla, TAMU and Kent State complain, but what can you do? They get NYD bowl games and that ain't bad.

Five NYD bowl games serve a good warm up. NYE with two bowl games. Christmas Day with two games. Three or four others thru Dec, that's 12 games. Forty teams in post-season. About 1/3 of all teams. Seems right.

Edit: LSU is ranked higher than Okla, who I originally had in. One could contemplate limiting number of entries from single conference, but that's a different discussion.

I'll also add that traditional bowl sites can be used. In fact, what I think would work is that interested bowl site commits to pay a certain amount of money if selected as host, depending on round. Other sites could participate as interested too.

I'd love to see it happen. Start the season a week earlier if need be.

The people who complain will point to the possibility of a couple teams playing 18 games....but frankly FCS already has a couple teams playing 15.

We want more college football AND we want the national championship decided on the field in a tournament format.

It would definitely help with the scheduling.

But in the end, I don't see the conferences doing away with their conference c-ships when 1. they are all 14 or 16 team conferences (too much left undecided with that many teams) and 2. They have regional sites that allow for good attendance.


Here is a compromise. Do away with the bye week and increase the number of scholarships given by 5-8. That probably hurts the MAC because we get less talent...but in the end, we have a seat at the table.

I don't think doing away with conference championships would be required for a 16-team playoff. For this season it would have been:

Nov 29-Dec 1: Conference Championships

[week skipped for preparation]

Dec 15: Round 1 (16 teams)

Dec 22: Round 2 (8 teams)

Dec 29: Round 3 (4 teams)

Jan 5: Round 4 (2 teams - National Championship)

And even if you extended it to Jan 12th, for an extra week of rest for teams -- would that be negative in ANY way? No.


Round 1: Home-Visitor Games Based on Seeding (not bowls)

Round 2: Each 4 games are separate big bowls, based on location of team; favored gets edge

Round 3: Both 2 games, two different bowls, in Final Four are in same stadium - 12PM-3:30PM , 8PM-11:30PM

Round 4: National Championship - Same Stadium as Final Four, but different National Champ Bowl

- Altogether, 7 BCS Bowls for the Playoffs.
- One non-BCS Bowl (Cotton Bowl?) gets bumped to BCS level to cover playoffs.
- Less traveling costs sharing 1 stadium for Final Four, last two rounds.
