I happen to feel the same way, even though I think that Mario Cristobal should have been allowed to coach the team for at least one season while a member of C-USA. He got shafted so the AD could take a run at hiring his good buddy Butch.

FIU has made it very clear that they have the same growth intentions and aspirations as USF and UCF. They want the same student body numbers, the same athletic success in the same size and quality of facilities. Since Florida does not make a younger school "kow-tow" to an older school's privileged status, they may just pull it off. Florida already has 5 BCS programs and is not likely to hobble any new guys who want to be #6 -- the same number as MS, AL & GA COMBINED!!.

When it comes to athletics at the university level, the state of Alabama is marching to a different drummer than Florida. Our state strives to protect the two major programs by keeping the others tied down to a less competitive level. It may well be that the reason one never hears UAB mentioned in the same sentence with so many former peers is that there is a national recognition that UAB might NEVER be able to make any major decisions on its own. Just like there is no "Home rule" for the state's counties and communities - municipalities, it appears there will never be that local decision making capability for its nonBCS UA System universities either. Who in Florida decided on Butch Davis' hire at FIU and who in Alabama is presently choosing UAB's new President?

If you add in those nonBCS schools for MS, AL and GA, you must do the same for the additional schools of equal rank in Florida - there are several.

The Florida public universities have a single systemwide Board of Governors, who act to grow and promote all twelve schools in their system. What a revelation, that schools in a system can be run in such a way as to act in the best interests of each school, rather than a favored one, er, few.
